9859. Maintenance: How To Update Your LCD TVs Firmware (Software) Through The USB 2.0 Port (2008-2010)


STEP 1. Through The USB 2.0 Port


Your TV is equip with a USB 2.0 that is used to display media as well as for firmware updates via USB. To update your TV via this method you will need the following:

  1. A USB flash drive with the storage capacity large enough for the firmware file.
  2. A computer with an internet connection.
  3. An extraction program. For Example: WinZip, WinRAR, etc. (this is a program used to open the downloaded firmware file).

Updating your firmware is a two Part process.

  • Part 1 is downloading the firmware. (Instructions found on Page 2)
  • Part 2 is loading it onto the TV. (Instructions found on Page 3)

STEP 2. Part 1: Downloading The Firmware


To download the firmware for your TV follow these steps.

Note: The instruction below are for an Windows 7 operating system.

  1. Go to the download center on Samsung's main page. Click here to be connected to the download center.
  2. After searching your model number, select the downloads tabs.
  1. Select the firmware section of the downloads
  1.  Now select the ZIP file in the firmware section
  1. After click on the ZIP file you will receive this warning. Click on "SEND" to begin download.
  1. Select "Save As" so you can set where the file download will be saved.
  1. Select the folder you would like to save the file to, and then click on "Save"
  1. The file will download. When finished click on "Open".
  2. Or double click on the downloaded file

  1. Important: Instructions for extracting firmware can vary depending on your software. Please see instructions from your software provider for un-zipping/extracting files.
  2. Your extraction program should open select the folder you would like the firmware saved to, we recommend the desktop.

  1. Your program will extract the files. The number of files will depend on the firmware.
  2. You will now have a folder in your selected save location. Take that folder and place it on your Thumb drive.


  • The folder name will depend on the firmware.
  • When the folder is put on your thumbdrive put it on the root drive, do not place it in a sub folder. If it is in a sub folder the TV will not be able to find the firmware.

Now that you have the firmware downloaded you are ready to update the firmware on your TV. Continue to Page 3 for intsructions on completing the process of uploading the firmware to the TV.


STEP 3. Part 2: Updating The Firmware On The TV


Once you have the firmware unzipped and loaded onto your tumb drive you are ready to upload it onto your TV.

To upload the firmware onto your TV follow these steps.

  1. Connect your USB thumb drive with the firmware file on it to your TV's Service port.
  1. Using your TV's remote press MENU to open the Main menu
  1. Use the ▲ or ▼ and select the "Support" section of the Main Menu, then press ENTER.
  1. Use the ▲ or ▼ to select the "Software Upgrade" option, then press ENTER.
  2. The Software Upgrade menu will appear and by default "By USB" will be highlighted if it is not use  the ▲ or ▼ to select "By USB", then press ENTER
  3. A message will appear on your screen stating "Scanning for USB. May take up to 30 seconds..."
  4. After finding the firmware, your TV will display a message that "A valid firmware version was found" and ask if you would like to update. Press ENTER to accept and begin the installation.
  1. After the firmware finishes installing your TV will power off and then power back on.

Your TVs will now have the latest firmware.
