San Angelo Resident Wins Trip to 2002 Olympic Winter Games

San Angelo, Texas (January 29, 2002) Michael Markovitch, 32, of San Angelo, Texas, was recently selected as one of the grand prize winners of Samsung's " Spirit of Sport" essay contest. The contest asked entrants to submit a short essay identifying a person who motivated them to participate in sports ? and describe how that encouragement changed their life both on and off the field. As part of the grand prize package, Markovitch has won a trip for himself and his mentor ? his wife Deanna ? to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Markovitch used his essay to describe the effect and impact his wife, Deanna, 32, has had on him staying involved in the sports he participated in as a child.

Always there to encourage her husband, this past year Deanna suggested that her, Michael and their four-and-a-half-year-old daughter all take taekwondo lessons together.

"My wife has supported me and has always been there with a proud high-five on congratulations, or a warm hug when the agony of defeat set in, but when she suggested taedwondo, I almost fell out of my chair." said Markovitch, a 911 dispatcher.

"Mike has always been the more into sports than I have, but they are a great outlet for both of us," said Deanna, a Technical Sargeant in the Air Force, stationed at Goodfellow Air Force Base. "We're both really excited to go to the Olympic Winter Games."

The Samsung "Spirit of Sport" Contest ran from October 8 to November 26 of last year and was promoted nationally. A panel of Olympic and sports experts ? including Olympic gold medalists Bonnie Blair (speed skating) and Eric Bergoust (freestyle aerial skiing) ? judged the entries. The five winners and their mentors will travel to the 2002 Olympic Winter Games and will be honored in a special ceremony on February 20 at the Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung, a major attraction in the Salt Lake Olympic Square that showcases Samsung's expertise in digital wireless telecommunications equipment and provides fans and athletes with the opportunity to interact with the equipment and technology.
