SAMSUNG Breaks Ground on New TFT-LCD Module Plant in Suzhou, China

Samsung’s Device Solution Network business unit is pursuing plans to establish an R&D center in China next year in order to build a local R&D network and attract highly competent people. A cooperative program with leading Chinese universities is on the drawing board to discover young talent and build a network of scientists and engineers.

Expansion of Samsung’s Chinese operations is expected to increase the number of locally hired Chinese employees working in the Device Solution Network business from the current 1,000 to 4,500 by 2006. The company has also announced that a chain of local distribution offices will be in place in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou by the end of this year as part of efforts to diversify the marketing structure.

Major computer manufacturers have recently entered China, and this is expected to drive local demand for semiconductors and LCDs, which are key components for computers. By expanding its Chinese semiconductor and LCD operations, Samsung is better positioned to strategically accommodate regional market changes. Samsung Electronics’ sales target for China this year is US$830 million, up 87% from last year’s figure.
