SAMSUNG Electronics Starts EDFA (Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier) Exports to China.

SEOUL, Korea - April, 15, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., Optical Materials Team Director, Namgoong Kiwoon and Wuhan Research Institute Director, Tian Liren signed a US $2 million contract for Samsung Electronics to supply EDFA (Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier).

The devices are designed to connect 2.5-gigabyte transmission equipment with cable TV networks. Normally, optical cable TV signals can be sent 40-50km, but the Samsung Electronics amplifiers boost the optical output 40 times, allowing the signals to be sent up to 200 kilometers.

The Wuhan Research Institute, in Hubei province, has the authority to decide and enforce Chinese government policy related to information and communications. The institute has been testing optical amplifiers made by Samsung Electronics and other leading electronics manufacturers for the past six months. Upon conclusion of the tests, institute officials revealed, "The Samsung Electronics products have passed all specification requirements and have proven to have outstanding quality and technology."

The Chinese government plans to expand its cable TV network nationwide in 1999, so the local market for EDFA is expected to reach US$10 million. Samsung Electroinics' winning of this initial export contract puts the company to expand its involvement in this growing market.

Samsung Electronics expects demand for optical amplifiers to grow quickly as China expands optical subscriber networks and super-fast data transmission networks. Therefore, the company plans to expand its business to include not only optical amplifiers for 2.5-gigabyte systems and wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems but also core optical elements.

(Transmit) Optical Amplifier
. Normally, optical amplifiers convert the electrical input into light, amplify it as light and then convert it back into an electric signal for the output. The transmit optical amplifiers boost the light signal directly, expanding the possible distance it can tbe transmitted.

WDM Transmission
. Wavelength division multiplexing allows signals of multiple wavelengths to be transmitted simultaneously, greatly increasing system transmission capacity.
