SAMSUNG Electronics Receives 30,000 unit / year TFT-LCD Contract From Reuters

SEOUL, Korea - July, 24, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., concluded a 30,000 unit / year TFT-LCD supply contract with Reuters, the world's largest communications company, at the Reuters Head Office in Geneva, Switzerland on July 24. Initially, Samsung Electronics will ship 13.3" and 15" models of the SyncMaster monitors, its own brand. Plans also call for the supply of 17" and 18" models starting around the end of this year.

Samsung Electronics uses highly advanced image scaling to give its monitors XGA (1,024 x 768) resolution. Meanwhile, multi-scan technology converts various frequencies being inputted from the PC into 60Hz, the optimal level for a TFT-LCD monitor, to ensure image quality. Synchronous DRAM chips perform the frequency conversion so the signal is directly inputted.

Other technical features that won over Reuters, a company known for its strict standards, included an automatic picture adjustment function and synchronous signal processing that can be performed at distances up to 300 meters.

The Reuters Group plans to replace all its CRT monitors with LCD models. Since the group holds the top share of the world's information services market, SamsuElectronics can expect a steady stream of new orders from Reuters in the future.

The Reuters Group provides news and financial data to major media in 161 countries. The group maintains offices in 217 cities located in 91 countries. Samsung Electronics expects that it will supply TFT-LCD monitors to not only these offices but also many of Reuters main clients, which include banks, financial institutions and news-related firms.
