SAMSUNG Electronics Ships Samples of 1-GigaByte SDRAM Module

SEOUL, Korea - September, 2, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., has become the world's first to develop a 1-GigaByte module consisting of second-generation 256M synchronous DRAM chips.
The modules, which are ready for mass production, can be used as the main memory in existing servers, workstations and high-performance PCs. In the future, they will also be used in HDTV, and new multimedia products such as: videoconferencing, on-line medical systems, interactive communications, satellite communications, personal data cards, and 3D graphics.
The module consists of thirty-six 256M synchronous DRAMs that are stacked in two layers. These modules fulfill Intel's PC-100 specifications. A single 1-GigaByte module is capable of storing the equivalent of 64,000 standard newspaper pages, 3,200 still photographs or 128 hours of audio data.
Last quarter, Samsung Electronics shipped samples of its 256M SDRAM to IBM, Hewlett-Packard and Intel, who all verified that the chip was an outstanding performer.
According to data issued by Dataquest in April, the world DRAM market in 1997 was US $20.7 billion, and is forecast to grow 1% to US $21 billion this year. However, the market is expected to start recovering in 1999, reaching US $26.9 billion. From 2001, when the 256M DRAM chip is in full supply, the world market is forecast to jump to US $58 billion.
