SAMSUNG Shares the Olympic Spirit

18 August 2004 (Athens) - Whilst athletes from over a hundred different nations are battling it out for gold medals at the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games , six lucky winner sand their guests have been treated to the prize of a life time, thanks to the Official Olympic Partner for the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games , Samsung. They have been taking in the atmosphere at the greatest sporting event in the world, following their success in the “ Share The Olympic Spirit with Samsung” online essay contest.
Having impressed the judges with their inspiring entry on Olympic heroes, six winners w ere chosen from thousands of entrants and invited to Athens alongside their six guests to experience the Olympic Games first hand.
In a rollercoaster four- day trip, the winners had opportunity to be part of the ATHENS 2004 Olympic Games by watching competition events of Volleyball, Beach Volleyball, Basketball , Water Polo and Handball

The highlight of their trip included a trip to the Athens Olympic Sports Complex where they brushed shoulders with the Olympic hero , Cathy Freeman at Samsung's specifically designed pavilion ? ‘Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung (OR@S) '. Here the six winners and their guests had a chance to discuss their winning Olympic hero essay and hear insights from Cathy's years of diverse competition. Especially, Yvonne Hauck from Germany, who won the essay contest and the trip to Athens by writing about Cathy Freeman as her Olympic Hero, has finally met her Olympian at OR@S.
Alongside these unique experiences, all the prize-winners have been treated to an insight into Greece's celebrated and historical Olympian past. With the return of the Olympic Games to their birthplace , they have visited famous Athens landmarks. These have included the Parthenon and Acropolis, monuments which embody and evoke the Olympic ideals, as well as a relaxing cruise down the world famous Corinthian Canal.
Yvonne Hauck was jubilant following the trip to Athens: “The Olympic Games mean a great deal to me and to have the opportunity to be in Athens during this unique sporting event and to enjoy the competition at first hand was amazing. The whole trip was a unique experience and I would like to thank Samsung for making my dreams a reality. I really enjoyed meeting Olympic hero , Cathy Freeman . ”

The essay contest, in which six countries participated including France, Germany, Italy, Russia , Spain and the UK asked entrants to share their thoughts, in a minimum of 160 words, on who their Olympic hero was and why. To incorporate the ideals of the Olympic Movement, participants were also asked to include one of the following key words ? goodwill, fair play, friendship, mind and effort.

Samsung then became a Worldwide Partner in the w ireless communications e quipment category for the Nagano 1998 Olympic Winter Games, Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, and Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The company has reaffirmed its strong commitment to the Olympic Games by signing on to continue as Worldwide Partner in the w ireless communications e quipment category for the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games and the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
