SAMSUNG Samples New 8Mb NtRAM SRAM For Faster Network Switching

Seoul, South Korea - October, 2, 1998 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., announced it had delivered first engineering samples of a new Synchronous SRAM, dubbed "NtRAM", to numerous top-tier networking companies. NtRAM is ideally suited for network switching applications, where bandwidth is critical. Targeted applications are in switches connecting users to a server, and in routers connecting users to the Internet.

Samsung's new 8Mb NtRAM is considerably faster than previous-generation solutions (150MHz) thanks to the "No Turnaround" bus between the Read and Write cycles for 100 % bus efficiency. The result is a higher-performing system at lower frequency. The 8Mb density provides a lower chip count, or a higher-density system. A 16Mb part will be offered in 1999 for even higher performance.

Samsung's KM736S849T NtRAM operates on a 2.5 V power supply, less than all other available solutions, saving power and enabling the system to run cooler and more efficiently. A 3.3 V version, KM736V849T, is also available. It will be offered in either 100 TQFP or 119 BGA packaging. The 119 BGA package offers a smaller footprint and higher speeds.

"Samsung is proud to offer an SRAM specifically tailored for network applications," said Ken Yap, Strategic Marketing Manager at Samsung. "Samsung's NtRAM will be adopted as an industry standard for network switching," he continued.

Toshiba Corporation and NEC Corporation are also joining the NtRAM initiative, and will be manufacturing and marketing compatible products.
