Tim and SAMSUNG : First In Europe To Run Trials Of The Mobile Phone Of The Future

Turin, February 10, 2006 :
To mark the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games, Telecom Italia and Samsung Electronics - represented respectively by Mr. Riccardo Ruggiero, CEO of Telecom Italia and Mr. Kitae Lee, President of Samsung's Telecom Business - today announced the start of Europe's first trial of WiBro (Wireless Broadband) technology.

Developed by Samsung, WiBro is Mobile WiMAX technology that will hike mobile broadband access up to 20/30 Megabits per second while on the move. WiBro will be rolled out in Korea in the first half of 2006.

WiBro-enabled phones allow always-on connection to mobile broadband, eliminating connection delays and making the service just like fixed-line broadband. Users can video-teleconference, send content to multiple users, make video-teleconference calls while consulting documents and images stored on the phone, and surf the net too.

With such broad bandwidth, WiBro mobile services will offer much better quality pictures than currently available. The new technology does not suffer from signal quality dropouts, even on fast-moving vehicles.

During the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games, Samsung and Telecom Italia will be demonstrating WiBro services at Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung (OR@S), Samsung's wireless telecommunications equipment technology showcase and Athlete Centre. Demos will also be held on the Demonstration Bus running through Turin, giving a live preview of the potential of these new applications while on the move. Samsung and Telecom Italia have also set up WiBro kiosks at Pinerolo and Sestriere.

TIM will start rolling out WiBro services in early 2007 with a flat-rate package of convergent services. Users can look forward to using their WiBro mobile phones to access all of the content commonly available on home PCs:, high-resolution photos, and more.

"Early adoption of WiBro technology is a key step in the Telecom Italia Group's successful strategic development of mobile broadband services," said Riccardo Ruggiero, CEO of Telecom Italia. "We are proud to be taking this step with Samsung, a technology leader and our long time partner."

Kitae Lee, President of Samsung's Telecommunication Network Business stated: "We are very pleased to have this chance to introduce Samsung's advanced WiBro technology to the Italian market with Telecom Italia. Samsung has been an official sponsor of the Wireless Communication Equipment Category since 1997, and the Torino 2006 Olympic Winter Games is the best possible venue to launch the WiBro service in Europe. I hope that our partnership with Telecom Italia will add momentum to WiBro service expansion globally."
