Galaxy S9/S9+: Is there harm if we use the IR for Iris authetication?

Last Update date : Apr 21. 2022

If eyes are exposed to IR within the distance of 2cm for more than 10 seconds, it might be harmful to your eyes.

But the Iris scanning of Galaxy S9 operates at the distance of 20cm~35cm within 1 second.

And, if you look at the iris recognition LED for more than 10 seconds or you are close to it, the device will automatically stop iris recognition to protect your eyes. Thus, there is no harm for human eyes.

In addition, IR LED of the Iris scanner for S9 achieved safety certification of highest level “Exempt” based on the international standard IEC 62471.(IEC : International Electronical Commission).

This means that the Iris Scan method applied on the Galaxy S9/S9+ have no photobiological hazard.
