5G, accelerating the 4th Industrial Revolution

Seoul, Korea - November 22 and 23, 2017 - The telecommunications community gathered in Seoul to attend the fourth edition of the Global 5G Event, organized by the 5G Forum and hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT of Korea. The event brought together representatives from leading countries and regions including Korea, Japan, Europe, USA, Brazil and others, in the aim of discussing national policies, R&D and global collaboration.

 

The forum hosted a series of keynotes and sessions with the common theme of the 4th Fourth Industrial Revolution, and discussed how 5G connectivity will serve as one of the pillars of this transformation. The sessions examined a variety of topics including Governmental policy, network deployment, PoC and trials, requirements and expectations of vertical markets and industries, cross-regional activities, 5G standards, and finally 5G at the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics.

A member of the 5G Forum, Samsung was represented by Dr. Wonil Roh, the Vice President and Head of Communications Research. Dr. Roh shared some of Samsung's latest achievements such as the demonstration of gigabit throughput using 3.5 GHz spectrum and 3GPP New Radio (NR) specifications and 4G-5G interworking tests realized in Korea.

Operators including Korea's KT, SK Telecom and LGU+, and Japan's KDDI also introduced their achievements in 5G trials and proved their networks expertise. They also demonstrated their services leadership with exciting applications ranging from Ultra-High Definition entertainment and immersive sports experience to connected / autonomous cars and robots.

 

The event ended on a highly positive note as it drew the general consensus that by working together, the industry will be able to effectively accelerate the realization of 5G and create new values not just for the industry but also customers and society.
