5G North America - Exploring Paths to Reach 5G's Full Potential

May 31. 2018

Texas, USA - May 31th, 2018 - Leaders of the wireless telecommunications industry assembled at the 5G North America conference in Austin, Texas, May 14 to 16, 2018, to review the promise of 5G and progress on the path toward realization. Speakers and participants from various institutions, including mobile service providers, equipment vendors, regulators, end users, and analysts, presented on topics including network architecture roadmaps, 5G trial findings and commercialization timelines, as well as potential use cases for consumers and businesses.

The conference began with a series of keynotes from leading US operators, including AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, and T-Mobile. The presentations explored each operator's vision for 5G, findings from lab and field trials, and commercialization timelines. The operator keynotes were followed by an introduction of Samsung's industry leadership and development of mmWave spectrum, with the focus on bringing the full potential of 5G to market.

Samsung was represented by Magnus Ojert, Vice President of Verizon Account for the Networks Division at Samsung Electronics America. During the session, Samsung introduced findings from a series of trials with leading operators in the US and around the world, confirming the performance of mmWave 5G, which will be a key component to unlocking the full potential of next generation networks. Samsung also highlighted that the first commercial use case of 5G will be fixed wireless access (FWA), which will establish a foundation for full 5G commercialization.

In the afternoon session, Derek Johnston, Head of Marketing, Networks Division, Samsung Electronics America, introduced several 5G use cases that Samsung has been developing and trialing with partners. Samsung has demonstrated its 5G leadership with operators around the world through various real-world trial scenarios and reinforced to participants that Samsung is a leader in network infrastructure. During the session, Samsung introduced 5G-enabled applications ranging from Ultra-High Definition entertainment and connected / autonomous cars to smart cities.

Finally, at a power panel session about the evolution of the Radio Access Network (RAN), Nivi Thadasina, Senior Director of Engineering, Networks Division, Samsung Electronics America, shared his insights and expertise on major trends in LTE-Advanced and 5G network architectures. In particular, Nivi highlighted the significance of virtualized and cloud RAN, open network interfaces, and the viability of mmWave spectrum.

The conference day ended on a positive note as industry leaders confirmed that the development of the 5G ecosystem is an essential element to the realization of 5G's full potential. And while ultimately 5G will operate across a wide range of spectrum bands, major US carriers reiterated the importance of mmWave bands in achieving transformative 5G performance and noted that results thus far have exceeded their expectations.
