SAMSUNG actively extends its leadership of Mobile WiMAX in the whole pan-American region

Seoul, Korea, April 2, 2009 – Samsung Electronics, a leading provider of Mobile WiMAX technology, today announced that the company expects to provide Mobile WiMAX technologies to Canada and several South American countries following its successful deployment in the United States.

 

Woonsub Kim, Executive Vice President and head of Telecommunication Systems Division of Samsung Electronics, said “North American Mobile WiMAX business gets on the right track with collaborations of industry top-tier investors. I believe that Mobile WiMAX is the best available service also in Latin America, which is sparsely populated in many mountainous areas and small islands.” “We are looking at the opportunities to bring mobile WiMAX services in Canadaand some Latin American countries and hope to conclude some of the deals by end of this year.” He continued with strong confidence.

 

At CTIA 2009, the US’s largest telecommunications trade show, Samsung exhibited the latest and the most diverse Mobile WiMAX system and device line-ups including U-RAS Flexible base station which provides enhanced network flexibility and efficiency using remote radio head technology, and U-RAS Compact base station, which can be used as a common platform for both mobile WiMAX (802.16e) and mobile WiMAX Evolution (802.16m). Samsung also demonstrated the remote video surveillance service, as an application of Mobile WiMAX technology in public security services, winning great responses.

 

Samsung is the world’s first Mobile WiMAX system and device provider, launching the world’s first commercial services in Koreain June 2006. As a leading provider, the company is currently doing business with 23 major operators in 19 countries all over the world, including Clearwire in US, UQ Communications in Japanand Yota in Russia. Clearwire recently disclosed a roll-out plan to bring Mobile WiMAX to 80 U.S cities covering 120 million people by 2010, UQ Communication announced to cover more than 90% of population by 2013 and Yota aims to expand service areas to 40 cities by 2012.

 

Moreover, Samsung has proven its leadership in Mobile WiMAX technology through the world’s first possession of all three bands of certification from the WiMAX Forum, including 2.3GHz (Wave1), 2.5GHz and 3.5GHz (Wave 2) equipment certifications. With Certifications for all three bands, Samsung can easily customize and localize the equipment and devices for each local service provider, who is providing fixed WiMAX service today, or who is considering to introduce next generation mobile communication technology in near future.
