PISCATAWAY, N.J., June 17, 2010 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a pioneering developer of technology that is changing how and where the world accesses data in mobile environments, is being honored by IEEE with the 2010 IEEE Corporate Innovation Recognition. IEEE is the world’s largest professional association advancing technology for humanity.
The award, sponsored by IEEE, recognizes Samsung for the innovative conception, development and deployment of Mobile WiMAX technology that enables the true ubiquity of mobile communications. The award will be presented on 26 June 2010 at the IEEE Honors Ceremony in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, and will be broadcast live on the Web through IEEE.tv (www.ieee.tv).
We’re honored that IEEE has recognized Samsung Electronics’ pioneering work in the development of mobile WiMAX technology, which has unlocked a new era in wireless broadband technology,” said Yoon-Woo Lee, vice chairman of Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. “Samsung continues to partner with major operators around the world to bring mobile WiMAX to consumers, and remains deeply committed to leading the way in next-generation telecommunications technology.
The next step in the evolution of wireless communications, Samsung introduced Mobile WiMAX technology in 2005 and it is now in use throughout the world. Mobile WiMAX offers the benefits provided by wired high-speed Internet and wireless local area network systems, but without their inherent restrictions, to provide seamless wireless broadband services in a truly mobile environment. Mobile WiMAX brings together many different technologies to provide a simple, low-cost, light-weight and Internet-friendly system that allows portable high-speed broadband access where wired networks, traditional cellular networks and even WiFi systems cannot. With Mobile WiMAX, customers can have high-speed access to multimedia services even while on the move, ultimately bringing the Internet to places it has never been before.
Since launching the world’s first commercial service in 2006, Samsung has played a leading role in the growth of the Mobile WiMAX industry. Offering end-to-end Mobile WiMAX solutions including chipsets, devices and infrastructure equipment, Samsung has partnered with more than 30 leading operators all over the world.
Samsung’s Mobile WiMAX technology is instrumental in providing broader Internet access within developing countries with limited access. Areas with weak or nonexistent wire-line infrastructure can take advantage of mobile broadband access without having to dig ground or build wire-line networks. Populations who may not have been able to afford desktop computers or expensive access fees can now access the Internet with less-expensive hand-held devices. And in countries with established or modern infrastructures, Mobile WiMAX presents the opportunity for enhanced services such as video streaming, interactive television, real-time gaming and mass Web browsing and e-mail access.
Samsung is committed to being a leader in the development and evolution of Mobile WiMAX technology. Actively participating in industry organizations, Samsung has lead standardization and establishment of equipment certifications, growing the mobile broadband industry through innovative, wide-ranging and low-cost WiMAX solutions. Samsung is already preparing for the evolution to the next-generation, IEEE 802.16m, cooperating to form a strong Mobile WiMAX eco-system.
