SAMSUNG enters Japanese Mobile WiMAX market

Seoul, Korea, March 3rd, 2008 - Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., a leading provider of telecom systems and mobile phones, announced today its provision of Mobile WiMAX equipments to UQ Communications, Japan based Mobile WiMAX service provider.

 

UQ Communications is the consortium company led by six independent companies in Japan such as KDDI, Japan’s second largest mobile service provider, Kyocera, Intel Capital and more. UQ Communications obtained license for Mobile WiMAX service from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, Japan last December.

 

At the press conference in Japan, UQ Communications announced that they select Samsung Electronics as an equipments vendor. According to UQ Communications, the necessary installation and trial will begin in Tokyo and Yokohama from February of 2009 followed by commercial Mobile WiMAX nation-wide service from 2009 summer.


Samsung has cooperated with KDDI, a major shareholder of UQ Communications, to provide Mobile WiMAX test equipments since 2005. Samsung and KDDI worked together providing CDMA equipments in 2002 as well.

 

Geesung Choi, the President of Telecom Business in Samsung Electronics, said: “As a global leader in Mobile WiMAX technologies, Samsung is excited to offer our equipments to Japan market in partnership with UQ Communications.” “Samsung will continue to enhance our leadership in Mobile WiMAX technology to benefit to Japanese and global consumers,” he added.

 

Samsung has already had successful experience in deploying Mobile WiMAX technology around the globe. Mobile WiMAX service was first commercialized in the Korean market in June of 2006. Samsung is currently providing equipments and devices to Sprint-Nextel for nation-wide commercial services in US.
