Barcelona, Spain, February 16, 2009 – Samsung Electronics, a leading provider of future mobile technology, unveiled two of the strongest candidates for 4G technologies - Mobile WiMAX and Long Term Evolution (LTE) - at Mobile World Congress 2009 in Barcelona today.
Both Mobile WiMAX and LTE have similar technological backbones such as Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA), Smart Antenna, Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) and more. Samsung has proven its leadership in Mobile WiMAX technology and has a long history of involvement in the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Collaboration between groups of telecommunications associations to make a globally applicable 3G and 4G standard is a natural progression for Samsung, who are also introducing the most up-to-date LTE technology at the show.
Hyojong Lee, Senior Vice President of Telecom Systems Division, said: “We have invested a lot of R&D and marketing resources in 4G Wireless Systems over the last few years. As a result, Samsung has been able to obtain the core technologies of 4G Systems such as OFDMA, MIMO and provide world first mobile WiMAX commercial services.”
He continued, “We see increasing demand for data services, regardless whether indoors or outside, even on the move. With our end-to-end Total Solution for the 4G wireless system, we will lead the way in this mobile broadband era.”
The latest and the most diverse Mobile WiMAX line-ups include mobile WiMAX UbicellTM Notebook, Mobile Internet Device (MID) and Smartphone, so as to target a diversity of consumer demands.
Samsung mobile WiMAX UbicellTM (branded Femtocell), a small cellular base station, will provide improvements in home wireless coverage and capacity. It is designed for easy installation, operation and use, taking into account that typical users do not have deep knowledge of communications and equipment. Samsung has experience supplying commercial CDMA UbicellTM services in the US.
In addition, Samsung exhibited two kinds of base station for macro coverage: U-RAS Flexible, which is a separated type of ‘Digital unit’ and ‘Radio unit’, and U-RAS Compact, which can be used as a common platform for Mobile WiMAX (802.16e) and Mobile WiMAX Evolution (802.16m).
Samsung’s first public debut of Long Term Evolution (LTE) included a total solution from infrastructure equipment to devices. In particular, Samsung has developed its own access network system and core network system, which support multi-vendor interoperability. Also Samsung is the first mobile manufacturer to showcase a mobile phone type LTE device.
Samsung’s LTE solution is fully compliant with the latest 3GPP LTE Rel-8 standard. Active discussion and trial tests are starting in 2009 and the first commercial LTE service will begin in 2010.
