Samsung Successfully Conducts China 5G Phase I Trial
Sep 23. 2016Beijing China – September 23, 2016 - Samsung Electronics announced it has successfully conducted a 5G trial and also received certification from the China Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) based on its successful completion of phase 1 of 5G Technology R&D Trial executed by the IMT-2020 (5G) Promotion Group at PT/EXPO CHINA 2016.
During the 5G phase 1 test in Beijing, Samsung has achieved success in proving the efficiencies of 5G key technologies and performances including mobility, peak throughput, and multi-user scheduling capacity. Most notably, Samsung has completed the test of new multi-carrier technology and spatial modulation. Samsung is currently in discussion with IMT-2020(5G) Promotion Group for the following 5G phase 2 test to come, and will continue being an active participant in bringing 5G toward.
"Over many years of research in 5G technology, Samsung possesses a wealth of knowledge and experiences to make 5G a reality. I am delighted that such efforts have served as a foundation for us to be certified as a 5G vendor by MIIT," said Dai Jun Zhang, Vice President and Head of Samsung R&D Institute China - Beijing. "To accelerate the realization of 5G standardization and commercialization in China, we will continue to strengthen our joint efforts with the Chinese government."
Since the late 2000s, Samsung has continuously been investing in experiments and studies involving 5G based technologies and, since 2014, has primarily focused on 5G commercialization technology. Through its efforts, Samsung’s milestone 5G technology developments have included the world's first handover demonstration in a multi-cell mmWave network, a 5G channel modeling of mmWave spectrum to significantly reduce the time and labor required for 5G network planning, RF technology essential in miniaturizing devices and equipment as well as world's first FD-MIMO live demonstration using 3.5GHz in 2015. Samsung has also played a key role in contributing to the formation of 3GPP standards, and holds essential patents for the new 5G standards, expected to be finalized in 2018.
