Samsung Wins "Most Innovative Application/Service" at LTE Awards 2014

Jun 24. 2014

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands - June 24, 2014 - Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a provider of mobile broadband network solutions, won Most Innovative Service/Application for its eMBMS (evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Service), solution at 2014 LTE Awards, one of the most prestigious awards in the mobile telecommunication industry. The solution represents an important step forward for both LTE and multimedia broadcasting technology by providing mobile network operators with a highly efficient method of delivering multimedia content to users.

"Operators that have deployed LTE are now looking for ways to bring the best possible service to their subscribers while also effectively monetizing their investment," said Sam Baker, Vice President of Marketing Group at Networks Business, Samsung Electronics. "The solid throughput capacity of LTE, coupled with the explosive growth of video consumption on mobile devices, means that network bottlenecks in both spectrum resources and backhaul transport will become increasingly apparent. Samsung's eMBMS solution provides an opportunity to meet both of these challenges, while giving operators the ability to develop new and differentiated services that set them apart from the competition. This award is an important point of recognition and validation for Samsung's commitment to innovation in the mobile telecommunications space."

With commercial deployment of Samsung's eMBMS solution in Korea in January, Samsung remains the first and only mobile network vendor with commercial LTE Broadcast experience. Samsung plans to conduct additional trials and deployments in the near future to continuously support mobile network operators with the most innovative network solutions and bring success to their businesses.

eMBMS, also often referred to as LTE Broadcast, allows operators to dynamically assign up to 60% of a cell's radio resources to broadcast traffic, minimizing the impact of simultaneous unicast on network congestion.

Samsung's eMBMS solution can serve a broad and dense group of subscribers without delay or interruption. The solution brings users closer to the action without negatively impacting network performance, something that is particularly useful in dense urban areas and at event venues such as sports stadiums or concert halls.

Spectrum resources committed to eMBMS can be adjusted to meet network demands throughout the day in accordance with expected time of heavy usage. For mobile network operators, this creates an important avenue for revenue generation while enabling end users to experience mobile networks in new and exciting ways.
