Samsung's Derek Johnston, John Godfrey, and Aditya Naik discuss the Digital Divide facing Americans, how fixed wireless access (FWA) can provide a solution to bring high speed, broadband access to underserved areas, and how Samsung can help.

Access to reliable broadband is critical in today’s world, but this access isn’t always available in rural and underserved areas of America. Last year, Congress passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act to bridge this digital divide. Currently, a grant program is in the works drafting maps of underserved areas to allocate funding to the states.

Service providers today can educate themselves about different broadband opportunities in preparation for the launch of the grant program. One such opportunity is fixed wireless access (FWA). Because fiber is expensive to deploy in rural areas where homes are spread apart, FWA is an ideal solution. FWA can cover large areas and jump over the “last mile” to people’s houses at a lower cost.

Samsung supports operators with its mmWave and mid-band FWA solutions, and has been at the forefront to advance technology solutions, launching the first commercial 5G network as a fixed wireless service in Sacramento, California with Verizon’s 5G Home product in 2018. Samsung can help operators deploy FWA today with its complete solution, including its small mmWave Compact Macro, which uses Massive MIMO and beamforming to increase coverage and signal strength. In the mid-band, Samsung’s 5G-ready CBRS also offers three-dimensional beamforming technology.
