Work Smarter, Not Harder with Accessories Designed for Samsung Rugged Phones!

Field workers are the backbone of the modern workforce as they work in rough and tough environments to improve our infrastructure, maintain supply chain efficiency, and boost factory productivity. To ensure a seamless workflow, field workers need robust, durable, and reliable devices to keep up with the fast-paced working environments of the manufacturing, transportation and logistics industries, and government sectors — yet, they often struggle to find the right one.

Rugged devices from Samsung — such as the Galaxy XCover6 Pro and Galaxy Tab Active4 Pro — are designed to enhance productivity, while ensuring a growing and consistent bottom line. In order to cater to the diverse needs of field workers, Samsung partnered with a myriad of companies, such as Koamtac, Targus, and Gamber-Johnson, to design accessories that augment Samsung rugged phones and transform them into purpose-built devices.

Accessories play a crucial role in transforming Samsung rugged devices into purpose-built devices, allowing users to customise and enhance their device capabilities to suit their specific needs. The accessories designed for Samsung rugged phones add enhanced functionality and convenience while protecting the devices from damage. Let’s take a look at some of the accessories that make the everyday tasks of field workers easier:

1. Desktop Chargers

The manufacturing, transportation, and logistics industries need rugged devices as they can withstand rough and tough working conditions. However, the challenge that comes with relying on rugged devices is the lack of access to power outlets to charge multiple devices at the same time.

Field workers in these industries often work in shifts and require their rugged devices to be fully charged and ready for immediate use when they clock in to work. To ensure consistent performance and productivity amidst long or multiple shifts, Samsung worked with external partners — such as Gamber-Johnson and Koamtac — to manufacture special desktop chargers that can charge multiple devices and batteries simultaneously. With the ability to charge up to five devices at once, new teams of shift workers never have to worry about the device suffering from low battery when they begin their shift.

2. Hand and Shoulder Straps

The biggest hindrance in adopting rugged devices in the workplace is their durability, cost of repairs, and device handling by employees. The working environments of field workers are often dangerous with rough flooring that could potentially damage the device after multiple drops. In fact, it was reported that American smartphone owners spend more than USD 3 billion on replacing broken phone screens in a single year.1

To alleviate this concern, businesses have the option of investing in various types of hand and shoulder straps that are uniquely designed for Samsung rugged phones from companies such as Otterbox and Targus. With these device straps, field workers can reduce accidental drops while ensuring they always have a free hand to carry out tasks — without worrying about damaging their devices. This adds an extra layer of protection, keeping devices safe and secure at all times.

3. Device Cradles

Field workers encompass a variety of job titles such as delivery drivers, police officers, warehouse assistants, farmers, and more. Some of these working environments, especially in the transportation, logistics, and government sectors, require work devices to be physically secured on the premises or in a vehicle. For instance, police officers and emergency responders rely on rugged devices that are mounted in their cars and ambulances to efficiently and effectively respond to calls and communicate with dispatch centres.

To cater to this need, Samsung partnered with various manufacturers, such as Koamtac and Gamber-Johnson, to produce device cradles that not only act as physical mechanisms to secure devices but also as charging cradles. These device cradles allow field workers to safely mount, dismount, and charge their devices without disrupting their workflow. Additionally, these device cradles also enable Samsung DeX, which allows workers to work on the go with a PC-like experience. Take for example a doctor in an operating room who needs to refer to patient data throughout the surgery. Instead of constantly referring to his device, he can easily cast the data to a larger display using a device cradle that enables Samsung Dex.

4. Data Capture with Barcode Scanning

In a traditional warehouse or retail setting, field workers face the hassle of carrying two or more devices as they need both a smartphone and a barcode/RFID scanner to store and transfer data. However, with the number of IoT devices expected to grow exponentially, traditional warehouses need to adopt warehouse mobility solutions such as Samsung rugged phones and data capture accessories.

With a data capture accessory for Samsung rugged phones, such as Koamtac’s SKXPro SmartSled, field workers who handle packaging, inventory, or production only need one device to scan items and transfer data. Not only does this eliminate the need for more than one device, but it also encourages field workers to adapt to mobile solutions that boost productivity.

Given the manufacturing industry’s high dependency on barcode scanning and reliable and robust data-capturing solutions, Samsung partnered with Koamtac to design and develop a pistol grip for intensive barcode scanning applications to reduce worker injuries and fatigue. Similarly, these data-capturing accessories can collect and transfer data from both barcodes and RFID tags, paving the way for an effortless digitised working environment.

5. Extended Batteries

Many people choose to replace their smartphones once they notice problems with their device's battery. This is often caused by overcharging the device which causes the battery to overheat, resulting in decreased battery life. When shifts run longer than expected, field workers tend to charge their rugged devices more frequently to ensure an uninterrupted workflow — and the same can be said for remote workers who are constantly charging their devices.

As a result of overcharging, the lifespan of the battery begins to deteriorate at a faster pace. In order to prevent this and prolong the lifespan of batteries in Samsung rugged phones, Koamtac developed extended batteries to meet peak uptime requirements. These extended battery packs can be attached to rugged devices to ensure the device runs smoothly without hindering performance and productivity, all while maintaining a healthy battery life.

One device should be able to cater to the needs of field workers in the manufacturing, transportation, logistics, and government sectors. Samsung’s line of rugged devices, complemented by various accessories, are renowned for their durability and endurance — ensuring businesses are outfitted with everything they need from a rugged device.
