Helping students develop critical thinking skills as AI enters the classroom

Discover simple ways to help students stay curious and think critically as AI becomes part of everyday learning. This article shares classroom-friendly ideas and professional resources to support responsible AI use.

Artificial Intelligence is already part of everyday learning. Students encounter it when they translate text, search for information, use text-to-speech, or scroll through videos and posts selected for them automatically. These tools often work quietly in the background, meaning students may not always notice when AI is shaping what they see or create.

When teachers help students recognize these moments, students become more deliberate in how they evaluate information. They ask more thoughtful questions and rely on their own judgment rather than accepting results at face value.

Teachers have already noticed a shift in the classroom. Curious learners are getting faster answers than ever before, but not always thinking as deeply about where those answers come from. New Samsung research finds that 81 percent of teachers1 worry students may rely too heavily on AI and weaken their critical thinking skills. This makes guidance crucial in helping students use AI thoughtfully and responsibly.

Without guidance, students may misuse AI

When information appears polished and is produced quickly, students may assume it is accurate without questioning how it was formed. Teachers increasingly see responses resembling AI-generated outputs, with little explanation or evidence of students’ own thinking.

This reliance extends beyond writing. Students may use translation, image-generation, or search tools without questioning meaning, accuracy, bias, or sources. The result can be shallow understanding, where answers sound confident but lack reasoning.

Many students also do not realize that AI can be wrong, biased, or raise questions about originality. Without guidance, confident outputs can easily be mistaken for reliable knowledge.

AI literacy builds on what teachers already do best

AI literacy is not all about mastering new tools or keeping up with every emerging technology. At its core, it is about helping students think carefully, ask questions, and take responsibility for how they use information.

Teachers already do this work every day. When they probe a student’s reasoning, ask for evidence, or invite reflection on a decision, they are reinforcing thoughtful judgment over automatic answers. As AI becomes more present in learning, these habits matter even more.

By grounding AI use in reasoning, ethics, and accountability, teachers help students see technology as a support for learning rather than a shortcut around it. This approach keeps thinking, not tools, at the center of the classroom.

Samsung Learning Hub supports educators on this journey

As AI becomes a more visible part of everyday learning, teachers are increasingly expected to make informed decisions about how technology shows up in their classrooms. Supporting students to think clearly and responsibly about AI begins with understanding what the technology can do, where its limitations lie, and why human judgment still matters.

Samsung Learning Hub2 provides a starting point for this understanding through a series of AI-focused courses, including Introduction to Artificial Intelligence, AI in Action, and Charting the Future with AI. These courses build baseline awareness of how AI works, how it is used across industries, and the ethical considerations that come with it. By strengthening educators’ understanding of AI concepts, trends, and risks, the platform supports more thoughtful conversations around AI use and helps teachers guide students with greater confidence as digital tools continue to evolve.
