What to do when Wi-Fi appears to be not connecting on your Samsung Galaxy device

If your Galaxy device appears to be unable to connect to Wi-Fi or unable to detect available Wi-Fi networks, the issue may be caused by an incorrect password, temporary software errors, router problems, or network settings. In some cases, third-party apps or outdated software may also affect Wi-Fi connectivity. Follow the troubleshooting steps below to restore Wi-Fi connections on your Galaxy device.

Temporary software or system errors may prevent Wi-Fi from connecting properly.

Restart using the power menu

Step 2. Tap the Power off icon.

Step 3. Tap Restart.

Restart using the buttons

If the device freezes or the Restart menu does not appear:

Press and hold the Side key and Volume down key at the same time for more than 7 seconds until the device restarts.

If Wi-Fi still does not connect after restarting the device, check whether the device software is up to date. Software updates can be installed wirelessly or through the Smart Switch program on a PC.

Step 1. Open Settings > Tap Software update.

Step 2. Tap Check for updates.

Step 3. Follow the on-screen instructions. A confirmation will appear once the software is up to date.

Note: When updating wirelessly without Wi-Fi, mobile data charges may apply if the download exceeds your data allowance. 

Wi-Fi connection issues may be caused by Wi-Fi being turned off, incorrect passwords, saved network errors, or recently installed third-party apps. Check the settings below and reconnect the Wi-Fi network.

Turn on Wi-Fi in Settings

Step 1. Open Settings > Tap Connections.

Step 2. Tap Wi-Fi.

Step 3. Turn on Wi-Fi.

Step 2. Tap the Wi-Fi icon to turn it on.

Remove and reconnect the Wi-Fi network

Step 2. Tap Wi-Fi.

Step 3. Press and hold the network with the issue.

Step 4. Tap Forget network.

Step 5. Select the Wi-Fi network again, then reconnect.

Check Wi-Fi in Safe mode

If Wi-Fi works normally in Safe mode, recently installed third-party apps may be causing the issue. Remove unnecessary apps in the order they were recently installed and restart the device.

Step 2. Tap the Power off icon.

Step 3. Press and hold Power off until the Safe mode is displayed.

Step 4. Tap Safe mode to turn your device on in safe mode. If you have successfully logged in, you will see the safe mode legend at the bottom of the screen. > Test Wi-Fi network again.

Note: To exit Safe mode, restart the Galaxy device.

If Wi-Fi still does not connect after reconnecting the network, try resetting the network settings.

Step 1. Open Settings > Tap General management.

Step 4. Tap Reset settings.

The wireless router or access point may be causing the connection issue. For wireless router and Wi-Fi security, avoid using simple passwords that can be easily accessed or shared. It is recommended to set a strong and secure password.

Check the router status

  • Make sure the router firmware is updated to the latest version.
  • Check whether the Wi-Fi network appears on other devices.
  • If the network is not detected on other devices, contact the router manufacturer for support.

Note: If the wireless router firmware cannot be updated or the Wi-Fi network cannot be detected, contact the wireless router manufacturer for assistance.

Restart the router

  • Disconnect and reconnect the router power cable.
  • If the power cable cannot be removed, restart the router from its settings page.
  • After restarting the router, try reconnecting the Galaxy device.

Note: Router settings and restart methods may vary depending on the manufacturer.

If the issue continues after trying the steps above, use Samsung Members Phone diagnostics to check the Wi-Fi status.

Note: Phone diagnostics is available only on Galaxy devices with the Samsung Members app installed.

Step 2. Tap Get started.
