Innovative WLAN technology from Samsung Electronics for the wireless business environment

on Oct 25, 2012

The wireless enterprise environment has faced a new paradigm shift with the era of the Smart Device. Until recently, the wireless LAN was mainly recognized as one of the ideal complements to wire communications; however, the demand for wireless LAN has risen largely owing to the explosive expansion of smart devices. The convenience of wireless communication, however, has some old issues. For example, the use of the Industrial-Scientific-Medical (ISM) band causes interference with other wireless devices (wireless mouse, Bluetooth devices, RFID devices, wireless phones, microwave ovens, etc.). In addition, the performance restrictions issue in IEEE802.11a, b, g and the demand for performance improvement in technologies such as standardized Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) of 11n and channel bonding have constantly risen. Above all, many companies and organizations have been reluctant to introduce WLAN based on their concerns about security. It is true that to address such issues, WLAN vendors have conducted large amounts of research and made great investments in interference avoidance technology, performance improvement technology and security, and put new technologies on the market; and based on such efforts, they have engaged in marketing and sales activities.

Then, is it possible to deal with a paradigm shift occurred with the advent of smart devices only with these technologies? Unfortunately, new and unexpected issues come to the fore. One big issue, which is simple and was easily anticipated by everyone but imposes great effects, is the increasing number of wireless devices owned by a single person. According to statistics, every person owns approximately 2.4 smart devices. This implies that it will be difficult to digest the increasing number of devices unless there is a larger number of Access Point (AP) or one AP handles more devices. Next, 'Mobility', which is one of the greatest features of smart devices, also cannot be overlooked. It is unusual for work to be done with a laptop in a hallway or in a stairwell even if the laptop is one of wireless devices like smart devices. However, smart devices are frequently used to support data communication such as working through the Internet, e-mail account and groupware while on the move. Moreover, such smart devices become a substitute for conventional wire telephones as they provide the voice call function.

For this reason, a high-quality voice service could be considered one of the most important roles of smart devices.
Even though the functions of smart devices have gradually improved, there are some limitations that will need to be dealt with before they can be on a par with the wireless performance of personal computers and laptops. As an example, laptops support up to 3X3 Multiple-Input and Multiple-Output (MIMO) while smart devices mostly support Single-Input and Single-Output (SISO) and its transmission power is very weak as well. In other words, smart devices have low throughput and are not easy to connect with AP compared to personal computers or laptops.
Lastly, despite the advancement of the standard of 802.11i (WPA2) to enhance standardization of conventional encryption and authentication, the establishment of a Wireless Intrusion Prevention System (WIPS) would be essential considering the current endless stream of more sophisticated wireless attacks.
Comprehensive assessment of such circumstances tells us that it is fair for wireless LAN systems to be adjusted in line with the new era and optimized. Samsung Electronics would like to propose solutions which cope perfectly not only with conventional problems but also with newly emerging issues.
They are technologies such as AirMove, AirEqualizer, VaTS, and IBSA which are developed by Samsung Electronics for wireless communication within a company. Samsung Electronics owns world-renowned technologies in a mobile communication area. Now, let's take an in-depth look at each of the different technologies in Samsung Electronics' wireless LAN solutions.

AirMove – Controller makes a judgment

Air Move

The Wi-Fi handover of conventional systems is configured to scan other APs and connect to an appropriate AP when a reception signal is detected below a certain threshold value. This technology basically requires a scan time to search another AP. Therefore, a seamless handover cannot be fundamentally implemented even by applying the standard (802.11r, etc.) for reducing the scanning time.

Samsung's AirMove technology, however, adopts the handover technology for LTE and allows the AP controller to determine the perfect handover time and target AP for handover. With this technology, you can enjoy seamless service for voice calls and video playing and guarantees throughput two-times and over compared to general Wi-Fi handover so as to provide mobility on par with mobile communication services.

AirEqualizer – Only works for particular minority devices? Fair Wireless World!

With the development of wireless LAN technologies, wireless devices for enterprises use various connection modes (802.11a/b/g/n). In addition, in terms of the types of traffic serviced (TCP, UDP, etc.), countless types of traffic such as groupware, video and voice files, printer and CAD files are also serviced through wireless communication.

Here, we need to consider that the fact above not only applies to a few particular wireless devices for certain purposes, and most employees in a company own one or more wireless devices. In such an enterprise wireless environment, it is required a technology to allocate equal airtime to various numbers of devices to provide an optimized service (wireless resources). In particular, a technology to enable a number of subscribes use a certain level of services concurrently is one of the most important factors. AirEqualizer technology from Samsung guarantees throughput fairness when various devices concurrently connect to AP and ensures fair service without the impact of certain devices even in an environment where devices of different traffic types are used. In addition, AirEqualizer is able to maximize cell throughput of overall AP by 50% or more compared to the wireless resource loss of competitors by providing the best performance suited to specifics such as Wi-Fi connection types (11a/b/g/n), signal strength, etc.

Voice Aware Traffic Scheduling (VaTS) – Scheduling technology to expand concurrent voice call capacity.

Voice Aware Traffic Scheduling (VaTS)

Along with the smart work trend, more and more companies are trying to ensure an efficient private communication environment for businesses with application of the Fixed Mobile Convergence (FMC) solution to employees' smartphones. VaTS is a patented technology from Samsung Electronics, which increases the concurrent call capacity by 50% or over compared to the current capacity by efficiently transmitting the voice frame to various devices used by mobile communication scheduling technology.

With this technology, it is expected that the customers' investment costs can be reduced by expanding concurrent voice call capacity in a high-density user environment.

Intelligent Beam Selectable Antenna (IBSA) - Antennas follow devices

Intelligent Beam Selectable Antenna (IBSA)

Enterprise AP from Samsung Electronics is composed of a maximum of 14 antennas. Such antennas provide the optimized radio frequency (RF) pattern by automatically selecting a beam for each environment. By doing so, they minimize shadow areas, expand coverage and enhance receiver sensitivity by 2dB or over compared with competitors. This enables the transmitting signal of smart devices with weak transmission power to be correctly received over a long distance.

The RF pattern generated by the extraordinary number of antennas compared to competitors and the intelligent algorithm follow you with the optimized services wherever your devices move to.

Self Organizing Network (SON) – Each of you is the best specialist in wireless LAN!

Self Organizing Network (SON)

As for successful establishment of enterprise wireless LAN, optimized cell design and sustainable quality maintenance are important factors as much as excellence of system. No matter how great system is introduced, if a cell is incorrectly designed due to misunderstanding of the establishment environment or a cell fails to respond to additional RF environment changes even after it is well designed, the successful wireless environment cannot be created.

To execute such invisible work, highly skilled wireless LAN engineers and managers are required. Unfortunately, however, such skillful technicians are few and far between. Hence, Samsung Electronics has developed SON technology for wireless LAN by adding LTE SON to automatic cell design technology through conventional wireless resource management, etc., to ensure automatic adjustment of transmission power and channel switches. This technology also automatically optimizes the cell configuration and coverage for the voice communication with consideration for specific features of smart devices. With this technology, the wireless technical officer in a company can become an expert in LAN.

In addition, Samsung's AP has an exclusive Security Monitoring Module and can execute RF sensing without an additional WIPS sensor. It also provides a comprehensive wireless management solution for both the wire and wireless environments by using AP/APC and L2 switch integrated management and smartphones.
