Eco LCD

The product which can reduce use of natural resources & energy consumption and the environmental impact compared with other products Samsung Electronics is supplying the eco-friendly LCD by cooperation of whole divisions.
Our internal standard of hazardous substances is stricter than that of RoHS Directive. By establishing and maintaining of this strict standard, we can satisfy all of our customers and meet their specific needs.
We are increasing the adoption of parts which can be reused or recycled after use and considering the recyclability and disassembility of products in design stage. By these activities, we are increasing the recycle rates and will meet WEEE Directive.
To improve the environmental impact during whole life cycle of products, we shall design products considering environmental impact not only the hazardous substances and recyclability. We are developing internal environmental evaluation tool for LCD products in order to consider the environmental aspect in design stage.
- 'u'-shape CCFL Lowers product mercury content
We began to switch over from straight-shaped cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) tubes to 'U'-shaped tube as the backlight in its LCD module for 23" TV in January 2004. Use of the new backlight has been subsquently extended to other LCD modules for TV. the brightness of LCD modules has not been affected by the change but the amount of mercury in the lamps has been halved. The results has been a reduction in natural resources and hazardous substances.
- Complete removal of hexavalent Chromium in screw
We began eliminating the six hazardous substances identified in RoHS directive before it goes into effect in July 2006. hexavalent Chromium in screw was used for making that rust resistant, but we completely switched over to using the benign trivalent chromium in 2004, increasing the environment friendliness of its LCD products.
- LED(Light Emitting display) Backlight for LCD panel
We has developed a LCD panel backlight that utilizes light-emitting diodes (LEDs) instead of cold cathode fluorescent lamp(CCFL) as the light source, and the prototypes of component are now in production. The "Xmitter LED backlight" for LCD module contain no mercury. Moreover, LEDs perate much cooler than CCFL tubes do. And power consumption can be lowered by at least 40W compared with the previous CCFL models.
