My Samsung Galaxy S6 doesn't recognise my fingerprint. How do I unlock my device?

My Samsung Galaxy S6 doesn't recognise my fingerprint. How do I unlock my device?

Your device may not recognise your fingerprint if your finger is damp or dirty, or if the button is smudged or dirty. Make sure your fingers and device are clean, and that you have removed any obstructions like gloves, and then try again.

Make sure that you are trying to unlock the screen with the same finger you set up the fingerprint lock with.

If your device does not recognise your fingerprint, it may prompt you to unlock your device using your backup PIN or password. Alternatively, you can swipe the screen to bring up the PIN/Password option.

1 Unlock using your backup password, PIN or pattern

When you originally set up your fingerprint on the device, you will have been asked to enter a backup password, PIN or pattern. If your device does not recognise your fingerprint, you can enter the backup password to access your device.

You can do this by swiping the screen. You will then be prompted to enter your PIN or password.

2 Unlock using Find My Mobile

If you do not remember your backup password, you can unlock your device using Find My Mobile

You can find out more about Find My Mobile here. Please note that you will have had to have had Remote Controls enabled on your device before you can use it.

3 Unlock using your Google password

If you are unable to use Find My Mobile or don't remember your unlock code, you may be able to unlock using the Google account set up on your device.

Note that if you have more than one Google account set up on your device, you will only be able to use this method to unlock using your main Google account (the one you set up first)

1 Choose the Unlock via Google option on the device.

Don't see it?

This option will only appear after you have entered your backup password or PIN the maximum number of times. Your device will also need to have internet access to use this option, whether this is via mobile data or via Wi-Fi.
