What does Neo QLED mean?

Neo QLED technology is an advancement of Samsung’s QLED technology, which stands for ‘Quantum dot LED’.

What are Quantum dots, you may ask? To put it simply, they are very small particles, a few nanometres in size. When these Quantum dots are illuminated by UV light from behind the screen, they acquire energy and then produce different colours of light. The light from quantum dots is more efficient than the light from conventional LCD, allowing QLED displays to be brighter and more colour accurate as well as more energy efficient compared to others. Neo QLED TVs let you enjoy your favourite series in brighter whites, darker blacks, and overall, a better colour range in between.

This new amazing experience can be made even richer with Samsung’s Q-Series Soundbars as it will synchronise perfectly with your TV to play sound simultaneously from both the TV speaker and Soundbars. You will hear the movement from across the room when connecting your TV with Samsung soundbars. Treat your ears to the best sound experience that matches the visuals. Hearing the car passing from left to right and never missing any small details, making it perfect for whatever you’re doing. Watching movies, listening to music, or even playing video games, Samsung TV and Soundbar have you covered!

Neo QLED vs QLED: What’s the difference?

Neo QLED technology is a revolutionary step up for conventional television screens. The difference between Neo QLED and QLED technology comes down to how the television panel is lit.

QLED TVs use LEDs to light up the screen from the edges or behind the TV panel. This traditional technique can evenly distribute luminance across the whole display. However, with the Quantum dot display in the Samsung Neo QLED, the LEDs are swapped out for tens of thousands of ‘Mini-LEDs’. As the TV panel can fit more mini-LEDs, the QLED TVs make sure to control every bit of your screen to the highest picture quality. You can sit back and enjoy your favourite show in the perfect colour contrast, contributing to the great HDR experience with a brighter, more vivid picture overall.

Neo QLED vs OLED: What’s the difference?

For a long time, OLED TVs have been hailed as the best top of the range TVs, but from the introduction of QLED and now Samsung Neo QLED TVs, that gap has diminished.

OLED is an anagram for an ‘Organic LED’, and due to the nature of these LEDs used, the panel cannot offer the same brightness levels as a Neo QLED. OLED TVs use a very different technique to display the picture compared to traditional LED screens. In an OLED TV, every single pixel has an LED that can produce light and colour while Neo QLED uses one Mini LED to light multiple pixels.

The quality of the LEDs used in OLED TVs will also degrade over time, causing the panel to become dimmer and may lead to burn-in issues. ‘Burn-in’ when referring to a TV panel is when the LEDs are on for a significantly long time, causing permanent dark spots to appear. This takes a long time to occur on an OLED panel but it will never happen on Neo QLED TVs. As TVs are not something that are generally replaced often, you should consider issues that OLED TVs can be susceptible to.
