Video creator Caleb Natale shares how you can shoot, edit and illustrate the perfect

Planning your story
It’s always a good idea to have a plan in place before you start shooting. It could be as simple as a brief sentence or two describing your project. For this video, Caleb outlined his plan to use a jump cut and some illustrations to “magically” whisk his wife, Karinna, away to Paris for Valentine’s Day.
Based on his description, Caleb made a list of what kind of location, props and costumes he’d need, plus the types of shots and angles required. Even the simplest video shoot can benefit from a little pre-planning.
Setting up the shot
Ready to create your masterpiece? You don’t need a crew to capture great video. Mount your phone on a tripod or prop it against a heavy household item to keep it steady and frame your shots. With Galaxy S22 Ultra or Galaxy S23 Ultra, you can use the built-in S Pen as a remote control to snap selfies or shoot video without a cameraperson. Caleb loves the ease of Galaxy S22 Ultra for his shoots, because he can quickly adjust his settings to keep all of his shots looking consistent. “The Pro Video feature inside the camera app is next level,” he says. “You can adjust your focus, shutter speed, white balance and ISO with practically no latency.” He also loves the built-in S Pen for adding notes to screenshots while reviewing his work: “The S Pen is a game changer.”
For editing tricks — like the jump cut used in Caleb’s “magical” costume and location change — it helps to have someone assisting you to keep everything in the same place while you set up the second part of the shot. Also remember to point, add gestures or draw in the air to indicate where you’ll add illustrations later.

Editing your video
Once you have all the footage you need, it’s time to edit. Caleb prefers to cut his video together before adding any artwork. While he created his V-Day video entirely on his Galaxy S22 Ultra, Caleb also loves Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra’s large display and S Pen functionality for editing and adding illustrations to his projects.

Caleb recommends using an illustrative style that matches the tone of your video. “If the video is supposed to be silly or goofy, then the art can be too,” he says. He also warns against using too much of a good thing. “It is very easy to clutter your image by adding too many designs,” he says. “It’s important to think about how your illustrations can enhance your video instead of detract from it.”
