What to do if your Samsung phone keeps restarting
If your Galaxy phone restarts unexpectedly without any user interaction, there are a few common causes. Use the guide below to identify the issue and find the right solution.
Cause 1: Auto restart is enabled in Device care
Symptoms
- Your phone restarts at specific times without any notice.
- Restarting occurs even when the battery is sufficiently charged.
- The restart may happen repeatedly or at scheduled times.
Why this happens
Samsung Galaxy devices include an Auto restart feature that helps keep the device running smoothly by restarting it at scheduled times. However, this can sometimes cause unexpected restarts if enabled unintentionally.
How to turn off Auto restart in Device care
Note: Auto restart is available only when the screen is off, the device is not in use, the battery level is above 30%, and the SIM card lock is turned off.
Cause 2: Unstable third-party apps or recent software updates
Symptoms
- Your phone restarts randomly during normal use or while idle.
- The restart pattern is irregular and hard to reproduce.
- The issue started after installing or updating certain apps.
Why this happens
Some third-party apps may cause system instability by consuming excessive memory or interfering with core services. Also, after applying a critical security patch, the system may require an automatic reboot even if auto updates are turned off.
How to remove recently installed or suspicious apps
Follow these steps to remove any app that may be affecting your phone:
Note:
- Look for any app that was installed around the time the issue began. Especially apps from unknown developers or those you don’t use often.
- If you are unsure which app is causing the issue, try uninstalling apps one by one, starting with the most recent ones, then test your device after each removal.
- The app "Cleaner" is a fictitious example created for illustrative purposes and does not represent a real or existing application.
Run diagnostics using Samsung Members app
Open the Samsung Members app and use the Phone diagnostics tool to check for restart-related issues.
Note:
- The Phone diagnostics feature is available on Galaxy devices with the Samsung Members app installed.
- If you want to test individual components, you can start with the full diagnostics by tapping Start and then stop the full test to select and run specific items.
- For critical security updates, your device may restart automatically even if the auto-download setting for software updates is turned off.
- Reboots after software updates are normal and help maintain device security and performance.
- If you don’t restart your phone for an extended period, issues may occur. To maintain optimal performance, we recommend enabling Auto restart.
- Device screenshots and menus may vary depending on the device model and software version.
