How to use Universal Gestures on your 2025 Samsung Smart TV

Experience hands-free control with Universal Gestures on your Samsung Smart TV. This feature lets you navigate your TV using simple hand movements with a paired Galaxy Watch. Whether you're cooking, working, or relaxing, enjoy a seamless and convenient way to interact with your TV, without reaching for a remote.

To get started with Universal Gestures, make sure your devices meet the following requirements.

Universal Gestures is supported on the following Samsung Smart TVs and Monitors:

  • Smart TVs: 2025 models U8000F or above
  • Smart Monitors: M90SF, M80F, M70F, and M50F (2025 models)
  • Upcoming support: 2023 and 2024 U7000 or above models after a 2025 OS update

Supported Mobile Devices:

  • Galaxy Watch 4 or later, running Wear OS 5 or above

Note:

  • This feature does not work with Galaxy Fit models.
  • The SmartThings app must be installed and updated to the latest version on both your watch and mobile device (available from January 2025). In the Galaxy Store, ensure that Auto update apps is enabled, and check that Auto update is turned on in your Galaxy Watch settings.

To use Universal Gestures, you need:

  • TV registered in SmartThings, and you must be a member of the TV’s location group.
  • Same Samsung account on both mobile and watch.
  • Both watch and mobile devices placed close to the TV or the Monitor.
  • Check if your TV appears on the Devices tab in the SmartThings app.

Before using Universal Gestures, make sure your Samsung Smart TV is registered in the SmartThings app. Then follow these steps on your Galaxy Watch to complete the setup:

Step 1. Open the SmartThings app on your Galaxy Watch

Step 2. Select your TV from the list

Step 3. Swipe through to enter Pointer mode.

Step 4. When a pairing prompt appears on either the TV or the watch, select Pair to connect the devices. Once paired, a cursor will appear on the TV screen.

Here is how your gestures are recognized:

1. To control the on-screen cursor: Move your wrist

2. To select an item: Pinch with your thumb and index finger

3. To go back or cancel: Clench your fist once

4. To return to the Home screen: Clench your fist twice

5. To scroll up or down: Rotate the bezel. For models without a physical bezel, the touch bezel will work instead

You can quickly open the TV Remote, including Universal Gestures, directly from your watch screen by setting it as a complication:

Step 1. On your mobile device, open the Wearable app, then select Watch faces.

Step 2. Tap Customize

Select the Pointer mode devices icon under Complication

Note: Menus and screenshots may differ depending on your device and software version.

Additional tips:

  • Universal Gestures work only when the watch screen is in Pointer mode. If the screen turns off or switches to another mode, the cursor will disappear.
  • Some third-party apps do not support Universal Gestures. A message will be shown in unsupported apps.
  • If the Button and Gesture feature is enabled, it may interfere with Universal Gestures. To use Universal Gestures, turn off Button and Gesture in the watch settings.
  • Wear the watch securely. If it’s worn loosely, gesture recognition may not work accurately.
