How do I connect my Galaxy Note to a screen using DeX?

Samsung DeX allows you to use your smartphone like a computer by connecting your mobile device to an external display, such as a TV or monitor.

Please note: DeX is available on many Galaxy smartphones such as the Galaxy Note8, Galaxy Note9 and Galaxy Note10/10+. Availability and design might vary depending on the model type and operating system installed on your device.

There are several ways to connect your smartphone to an external display.

The DeX Cable is the easiest way to connect your Galaxy Note to a screen.

1 Connect the cable to your Galaxy Note.
2 Connect the other end of the cable to your TV or monitor.

You can also connect your Galaxy Note to an external screen using an HDMI adapter or a multi-port adapter.

1 Connect your Galaxy Note to the adapter.
2 Connect the adapter to your TV or monitor.

1 Connect the DeX Pad to a power source.
2 Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the DeX Pad’s HDMI port.
3 Connect the other end of the cable into a TV or monitor’s HDMI port.

4 Connect your smartphone to the mobile device connector (USB Type-C) on the DeX Pad. If your phone is locked, please unlock it now.

Please note: Ensure that your smartphone is horizontally inserted to the connector. Otherwise, the DeX Pad and your smartphone may be damaged.

1 Connect the DeX Station to a power source.
2 Connect one end of an HDMI cable to the DeX Station’s HDMI port.
3 Plug the other end of the cable into a TV or monitor’s HDMI port.

4 Press the triangle icon on the front of the cover to use the cover as a phone support. The mobile device connector will become visible.

5 Connect the Galaxy Note’s USB Type-C port to the mobile device connector on the DeX Station. Samsung DeX will then launch on the Note.

Please note: Make sure the phone is properly connected to the DeX Station. Please be careful when connecting the phone to the DeX station to avoid damaging the device. Please be aware also that certain phone cases (such as flip covers or hard covers) may prevent the DeX Station from working properly. If so, remove the phone’s case before proceeding.

On the Galaxy Note10 and Note10+, setting up a connection with a PC and using Samsung DeX is even easier. There is no need for an HDMI cable or DeX Pad/ Station. Instead, you can use a single USB cable to use DeX on your PC or Mac.

 

You can also move files easily between your smartphone and your PC using intuitive gestures such as drag and drop, copy and paste.

1 When using Samsung DeX on your PC or Mac for the first time you need to install the Samsung DeX app on your PC/Mac first.

Download the Samsung DeX software for your PC/Mac and follow the on-screen instructions.

Please note: Samsung DeX for PC is supported for PCs with Windows 10 & 7 and Mac OS 10.14 (Mojave) and 10.13 (High Sierra).

2 Connect your smartphone to the PC or Mac using a USB-C cable.
3 Instead of having to connect a keyboard or mouse to the DeX Station or DeX Pad, you can simply use your PC’s keyboard and mouse to navigate on the screen.

Please note: DRM protected content may not be displayed correctly. Certain apps may not run or require separate licenses to run on DeX. You can use a maximum of 5 apps on the screen at once with Samsung DeX for PC.

After connecting the Galaxy Note to a TV or display, select the screen mode you wish to use. You can choose between Samsung DeX mode or Screen mirroring.

 

Samsung DeX: The mobile device’s screen will turn off and appear on the connected TV or monitor in desktop mode. Use your device as a pad to control what happens on the screen.

Screen mirroring: The content of your Galaxy Note will be mirrored on the connected screen.

OS Android 8 (Oreo): When connecting your phone with Samsung DeX for the first time, a window opens automatically showing the options “Start Samsung DeX” or “Switch to screen mirroring”. Simply tap the option you wish to use.

OS Android 9 (Pie): When connecting your Galaxy Note with OS Android Pie with DeX for the first time, follow the steps below to use the DeX mode:

1 Read the information on the screen and tap “Continue”.

2 More information about using Samsung DeX will be displayed. Read it carefully and confirm by tapping “Start”.

After the initial setup, you can launch DeX mode from the Notification Panel.

1 Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to open the Notification Panel.

2 Tap the “Samsung DeX” drop-down menu.

3 Select “Fast charging” or “Screen mirroring”.

Using your phone as a touchpadClick to Expand

When using Samsung DeX mode, you can also use your phone as a touchpad. To activate this option:

1 Swipe down with two fingers from the top of the screen to open the Notification Panel.
2 Tap the “Samsung DeX” drop-down menu.
3 Tap “Use your phone as a touchpad”.

4 Double tap the screen to bring it in landscape mode. In landscape mode you will be able to use the S Pen to navigate the screen.

5 If you want to leave the touchpad again, simply swipe up from the bottom of the screen or swipe down from the top of the screen to show buttons and notifications. Then tap the back or the home button.

Please note: Use only official Samsung DeX supported accessories to avoid performance problems and malfunctions due to third party applications.
