What is a
QLED TV?
Ever wondered what a QLED
TV is and how it works?
Let us break it down for you.
What’s a QLED TV and Quantum Dot technology?
QLED, an acronym for ‘Quantum Dot light-emitting diode’, is a state-of-the-art television display technology. It uses Quantum Dots to enhance picture quality and brightness levels considerably.
Quantum Dots are ultra-fine semiconductor materials of nanoscale size. These dots produce different colors of light depending on the particle size—the larger the size the more red the color, and the smaller the size the more blue the color. They are able to emit precisely colored light because particle sizes adjust at quantum-level velocities, resulting in accurate and efficient light emissions. The greater efficiency in luminance brings about tremendous changes in overall picture quality.
QLED TVs allow precise control over brightness, contrast, and picture quality by using a Quantum Dot layer placed between the LED backlight and the LCD panel. Additionally, QLED TVs are offer superior wider viewing angles compared to other LCD displays. If you’re looking for a TV with impressive picture quality and innovative features, a QLED TV is your perfect match.
What's special
about QLED TVs?
QLED TVs take advantage of the many unique characteristics offered by Quantum Dot’s high luminance technology. Luminance refers to how bright a screen looks, and that brightness is an important factor that affects other elements of image quality. The contrast ratio is naturally improved when brightness is higher. When bright and dark representations of videos and images can be intensely expressed, it's known as HDR (high dynamic range). This HDR, which is an essential component of picture quality, enhances images to make them look crisp and rich.
Now, let's have a look at how all this affects color.
The effect of brightness on overall color quality is simple. For example, in the red color spectrum, there is a range of bright and dark reds. QLED TVs express this range of colors better. This unique QLED technology, along with other black implementation technologies such as Direct Full Array, provides a completely different picture quality and a more realistic viewing experience compared to non-QLED TVs.
QLED vs OLED: What’s the difference?
Let’s learn more about these two television technologies and explore their differences between OLED and QLED in terms of black levels, peak brightness levels, response time, uniformity, color volume, and lifespan.
When comparing the two in terms of black levels, QLED offers impressive black levels, but an OLED TV’s black level is deeper. Why? Because OLED technology features self-emissive pixels that turn off when they need to go black. This means no inconsistent LCD backlights, just pure black tones. Moving on to other factors such as peak brightness, QLED TVs offer higher peak brightness levels when compared to OLED TVs. QLED TVs also have a faster response time without major burn-ins, better brightness uniformity across the screen, and unaffected color accuracy at higher brightness levels.
What is burn-in?
Burn-in is a permanent defect in the panel where a residual screen image appears permanently on the screen. If you think about frequently displayed images such as broadcaster logos, they are in the same fixed area for a certain period of time. Repeatedly displaying the same logo in the same place is enough to result in a Burn-in. QLED TVs use Quantum dots which are inorganic, durable, stable and allow for excellent color and brightness. QLED TVs have the advantage that you can watch your content for long periods of time without having to worry about Burn-in—allowing for an overall longer TV lifespan.
