What to do when your Samsung Galaxy device heats up while in use
Galaxy devices are designed to operate reliably in both high and low temperatures. During temporary temperature rise, system and battery protection features (such as charging limitation) may automatically activate. Depending on usage or environment, the device may feel warm. Please review the guidance below to manage heat and use your device safely.
Causes of device heating and precautions
Using non-genuine chargers or cables, or charging wirelessly with foreign objects such as metal, magnets, or cards between the device and charger, may cause the device to heat up. It can also occur if the connector is contaminated with liquid, dust, or metal particles. Temporary heating may occur when using high-power apps, multitasking, or performing intensive tasks such as charging, data transfer, or recording.
Note: Close running apps and pause use of the device to allow it to cool down naturally.
The device may heat up more easily in the following situations:
- Charging: Damaged or non-genuine charger or cable, foreign objects on the charging pad, or using demanding apps while fast charging
- Usage: Initial setup, data restoration, file transfer, gaming, streaming, long recording, or maximum screen brightness for long periods
- Connections: Extended hotspot or tethering use, TV or PC connection, or using navigation while watching or recording videos
- Environment: Hot or enclosed areas, direct sunlight, bedding, bags, clothing pockets, near heat sources such as heaters or electric mats, or weak-signal or roaming areas
Actions to take when heating occurs
1. Optimise your Galaxy Device
Optimising your device reduces background activity and helps reduce heat.
2. Enable the Power saving mode
Power saving reduces power consumption and heat. You can also limit background app activity.
Note:
- Regularly check that your apps are updated to the latest version.
- Power saving mode limits network, data sync, and background location usage.
3. Manage heat while charging
The device may heat while charging, especially when using wireless or fast chargers. If it feels hot, unplug the charger and close apps. Wait until it cools, then charge again.
Using Samsung-approved chargers and cables is recommended. For wireless charging, ensure no metal, magnets, or cards are between the device and charger.
How to use Light mode
Light mode adjusts the maximum processing speed of the AP to reduce heat and power consumption. Set Light mode to minimise heat generation and use your battery more efficiently.
Note: Light mode does not affect performance.
Run diagnostics using Samsung Members app
Open the Samsung Members app and use the Phone Diagnostics tool to check the battery status.
Note:
- Self-diagnosis is available only on Galaxy devices with the Samsung Members app installed.
- If the connection is unstable, try again using the Samsung Internet app.
- Menu names, paths, and screen layouts may vary depending on your device model, software or app version.
