Moving an app to your SD or memory card

You can save space on your smart device by moving apps to your microSD card. Note that you will need to have a microSD card installed in your device and some apps cannot be moved to the SD card if they are needed for the running of the device.

Note that the method for the Samsung Galaxy S7 and S7 edge is different. Click here to find out how to move apps to storage on your S7 or S7 edge.

For other devices, there are two main methods to move apps to your SD card depending on which device you own and its operating system. Use the method below that most closely fits your device.

Moving an app to your SD card (Method one)

1 Tap the Menu key, then Settings

Note: if you tap this key on your device and it brings up recently used apps rather than a Settings menu, you need to use Method two below

Troubleshooting

The option to move is greyed out/not available

If the Move to SD card option is greyed out or if the application is not listed then the app cannot be transferred to the SD card.

Some system apps cannot be moved out of the device's internal storage without reducing the device's functionality and some apps are not designed to be used outside of the device's internal storage.

I moved the app to my SD card but it's back in device storage

Some apps move back to device storage after they have been updated. This is usually because the app saves its data to device storage by default when downloading or updating, and updates may not install properly otherwise. If you are having difficulty with a particular app, we recommend contacting the developer directly. Samsung is unable to provide support for third-party apps.
