Selecting the correct projector screen type when using The Premiere

Last Update date : 2024-02-21

When using the Premiere projector, it is essential to use a projection screen type that is suitable for the product. An incorrect or unsuitable screen type may result in ambient light bleeding, which causes uneven lighting on the projected screen. The correct screen type will ensure an optimal viewing experience by either reflecting or absorbing ambient light.

If a screen is selected that is not suitable for the style of your Samsung projector, the light from the projector may be reflected incorrectly (such as in the wrong direction). Ambient light (such as that from ceiling lamps, windows, or light entering from adjacent rooms) may also be reflected incorrectly. These conditions may cause light bleeding and a low-contrast image.

Additionally, most walls that are used for projection are not completely flat and may have uneven textures. Most white walls are not neutral white (they may be off-white or cream), which may lead to discoloration.

In a dedicated home theater or darkroom, it is important to use a screen with optimal reflectivity to avoid excessive reflection of the projector light onto the ceiling or walls. It is also recommended to use a UST (Ultra Short Throw) projector screen to compensate for any external light sources that may degrade the image quality. Please see the next section in this article for more information about UST projector screens.

Although gray screens can also be used, please keep in mind that they may reduce the brightness of images.

When selecting a proper screen, please consider and use the following:

  • A screen that is compatible with the usable screen size of your projector.

  • An optimal contrast.

  • A wide view angle type.

  • A high horizontal and vertical viewing angle.

  • A high ALSR, or ambient light blocking rate.

  • An optimal Gain. Screens with a high Gain may reflect too much light, causing the light to be visible outside the screen. However, screens with a low Gain may appear too dim. To prevent excessive reflection of the projector light onto the ceiling or walls, use a screen with an appropriate level of Gain.

Note: Gain is a measurement of the reflectivity of a screen or projection surface. The gain number represents a ratio of the light that is reflected from the screen as compared to the light reflected from a standard white (magnesium oxide) reference board.

A UST (Ultra Short Throw) screen is the most suitable screen type when using The Premiere projector. This screen will reflect light from the projector while also diverting and absorbing ambient light. UST projector screens are meant to be positioned close to a wall and will reflect light at an angle. This process will then cast the light into the viewing area.

If the distance between the projector and the screen is incorrect or if the screen size is not properly adjusted, the image may appear smaller than the screen or extend beyond the edges of the screen. The following guidelines and tips can be used to resolve the issue:

  • First, adjust the picture size by adjusting the distance and height.

  • Then, adjust the picture size on the projector itself.

  • If the projector is installed too far from the screen, the projected picture size will be much larger than the screen.

  • If the projector and the screen are too close, the image may appear small.

Note

  •  The issues that may arise from using an unsuitable screen type are not caused by the product itself.
