How to Troubleshoot TV Remote Control

Last Update date : Dec 05. 2022

There are many reasons why your TV remote might not be working. However, the most common reasons include battery issues, pairing issues, or infrared sensor issues. Find out how to check for and troubleshoot such issues.

Method 1. Check the batteries on your remote

Press the power button while pointing the remote control at your TV. Make sure the LED indicator on the TV blinks. If not, your remote does not have enough power remaining in the batteries.

Note:

  • Ensure that the batteries' polarities (positive, negative) are oriented correctly.
  • If the batteries are inserted correctly but still not working, replace the batteries with new batteries. It is recommended for you to replace the batteries in pairs, not individually.

Method 2. Pair your smart remote control

If you use Smart remote control, it may need to be paired to work properly again. Press the Return and Play/Pause buttons simultaneously for more than 3 seconds to display the pairing pop-up window.

Method 3. Check for interference and obstruction

Remove any obstructions between your TV and your remote. If there are any objects between the remote and the receiver on the TV, infrared signals may be blocked. In addition, electronic equipment can disrupt the signal from your remote. If you have any electronics, such as lights, radios, or mobile devices around your TV, try moving them further away.

Method 4. Check the infrared signal visually

You can check the infrared signal by using any digital camera, including the one on your mobile device. Turn on the camera and point the front tip of the remote at the camera lens. Press and hold the power button on the remote while looking at the mobile device screen. You will see a light or flash coming from the remote.

If you cannot see any light or flash coming from the remote and you have already replaced the batteries of the remote, it means that the remote has a problem.
