Change the Ringtone on a Samsung Phone

Change up the Ringtone on a Samsung device by selecting a pre-loaded ringtone or use a custom music file. You can even select an individual ringtone for a specific contact; so when your phone plays a special ringtone you'll know who's calling. Need help customising your notification tones? If you would like to extend the number of rings before a call is sent to your voicemail, you will need to get in touch with your network provider as they will be able to increase the ringer length before your call is diverted to your voicemail. 

Choose a New Ringtone
1 Head into your Settings > Sounds & Vibration
Head into your Settings > Sounds and vibrations
2 Select Ringtone
Tap on Ringtone
3 Choose from the preloaded ringtones
Select a pre-loaded ringtone
4 Press the back button to Apply the ringtone changes
Use a Music File as a Ringtone

You can use files that are saved to your device as MP3, WAV, AAC and MP4 as a custom Ringtone. To use a music file as a ringtone, see the steps below:

1 Head into your Settings > Sounds & Vibration
Head into your Settings > Sounds and vibrations
2 Select Ringtone
Tap on Ringtone
3 Tap on add icon
Tap on the plus button
4 Select the music file you would like to set as your ringtone then tap Done

If prompted, select Sound Picker to find music files on your device.

Select the music file you would like to use as your ringtone then tap on done
Customise the Ringtone of a Single Contact

Whether it's your boss, your BFF, or a favourite family member; you can customise the ringtone that plays when that special someone calls your phone. There's no limit to how many different contacts you can select a custom ringtone for. See the steps on how to choose a separate ringtone for just one person in your contacts:

1 Open the contacts app icon Contacts app
Open the contacts app
2 Select a contact you would like to add a custom ringtone
Select a contact you would like to add a custom ringtone to
3 Tap on Edit
Tap on Edit
4 Tap the Ringtone option

Select View More  at the bottom of the page on devices running Android OS 7 and higher

Tap on the ringtone option
5 Select from the available pre-loaded ringtones, or tap add icon to add a music file on your device
Select new ringtone
Custom Individual/ Group Message Notifications

On devices running Android OS 7 and higher, you can set individual/ group Notification sounds for the Samsung Messages app. For devices running Android OS 7, you can follow the steps for Customising the Ringtone for a Single Contact, and select Notifications at Step 4 instead. For devices running Android OS 8 or 9, see the steps below:

Please Note: If you delete the message conversation and recreate another conversation with the same contact, the notification tone will revert to the default notification tone. If you want a customised message tone for a specific contact or conversation, you will need to follow the below steps to reapply the custom tone.

1 Open the message app icon Samsung Messages app
Launch Samsung Message app
2 Open the conversation you want to customise
Open a conversation you would like to customise
3 Tap the 3 dot menu button at the top right
Tap on the three dots
4 Select the Notification Type or Custom Notification option
Select notification type
5 Tap on Custom then select settings cogwheel icon
Select Custom
5 Select Sound and choose from the pre-loaded Notification sounds

Use the Home or Back key to exit and finish

Pick new ringtone sound
