Galaxy Phone Water Resistance

Last Update date : Mar 10. 2023

Galaxy phones are water resistant so that you can continue to use your phone when it is exposed to water during your daily life. It is important to note the level of protection offered and how to use your device during and after exposure.

What level of water resistance does my Galaxy device have?

Galaxy phones usually support IPx7 or IPx8 rated water resistance. This level of protection can be used in situations where a device is exposed to water during daily life.

  • The IPx7 rating provides 30 minutes of water resistance at a depth of 1 metre and the IPx8 rating provides 30 minutes of water resistance at a depth of 1.5 metres.

It is not recommended to use it at depths deeper than these levels or in areas with high water pressure, even if it is within the reference depth (1 metre or 1.5 metres) as water resistance is not guaranteed if it is used for more than 30 minutes.

  • If your device is not listed above, check the instruction manual as the level of water resistance and rating may vary depending on the model.
  • IPX8 water resistance classification was tested by submerging the device in 1.5m of fresh water for 30 minutes, leaving it still, without any movement, to meet the requirements of IEC 60529 certification.

When using a Galaxy phone in or around water, what should I pay attention to?

The water resistance of Galaxy phones is not permanent and may be naturally weakened over time or through natural wear and tear.

When using products with water resistance observe the following points to prolong the supplied level of protection.

  • Do not immerse the product in water below 1 metre for IPx7 phones or 1.5 metres for IPx8 rated phones for more than 30 minutes.
  • Do not expose the product to unclean water or liquids (salt water, pool water, soapy water, oils, perfumes, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, chemicals such as cosmetics, liquids containing alcohol, etc).
  • Do not expose the product to high water pressure.
  • Do not use the product in abnormal temperatures such as saunas and steam rooms, or in places with high humidity.
  • Do not drop, hit or cause any to shock the product.
  • Use the supplied tray release pin to remove the SIM card tray of the product and push it in completely to avoid gaps when reinserting the SIM card tray. Also, be careful not to let foreign objects get into the SIM card tray and grooves.

What to do if your device is exposed to water

If a water-resistant device is exposed to water, liquid, or contaminants, follow these instructions:

  • Wipe with a soft, clean cloth to dry thoroughly.
  • Do not connect the charger or accessories until the product is completely dry. Connecting the charger or accessories while the external connection jack is not completely dry may damage the product.
  • If the microphone, speaker or receiver is not completely dry, the quality of voice calls or audio may be affected.

Please note: When using the product in water, some functions such as touch may not work.

If a product that is not water resistant is exposed to water, liquid, or contaminants, follow these instructions:

  • Quickly remove the SIM, SD card, etc. from the product.
  • Dry with a dry towel and visit Samsung Electronics Service Centre.
  • If it is difficult to visit the prompt service centre, please dry it in a well-ventilated, low-light place with a cool breeze.
  • Even after drying moisture may remain inside the product, so do not turn it on, and have it checked by a service centre as soon as possible.

In addition, do not use heating devices such as hair dryers to dry the product, and do not use soap, detergents, abrasive substances, other chemicals, compressed air, or use ultrasonic or external heat sources to clean the product.

Failure to follow the precautions may cause damage to the product such as discoloration or corrosion.
