Tips to extend your Samsung Galaxy battery life

Last Update date : Jul 13. 2021

Battery life can be affected by various factors such as device settings, environment, and usage patterns. Understand these factors to use your battery more efficiently and for a longer period of time.

Before you try the recommendations below, be sure to check if your device's software and related apps are updated to the latest version. To update your mobile device's software, follow these steps:

Step 1. Go to Settings > Software update.

Step 2. Tap on Download and install.

Step 3. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Optimal Battery Usage Environment

Galaxy is designed to perform best at 0° ~ 35°C. Continuous use or charging in extreme temperatures may accelerate battery deterioration. Temporary exposure to extreme temperatures will activate the device’s safeguards to minimize damage, and charging will be limited to protect the battery from overheating.

Battery consumption increases in areas with weak or overlapping signals or with increased screen brightness under strong sunlight or any other light source.

Note: Galaxy offers Adaptive Brightness to optimize screen visibility based on the light intensity
of the environment.

Minimize battery deterioration with proper charging

Using your device for the first time? Been a while since your last use? If so, try fully charging your battery before use.

  • Always use an authentic Samsung charger to avoid battery deterioration and damage.
  • Always use a charger that fits. An incompatible charger could damage the USB port.
  • Properly connect the charger. Failure to properly connect may damage the device.
  • Unplug the charger after the device has reached 100% charge to avoid a swollen battery.

If your device will remain unused, try the following.

Battery deterioration may accelerate if a device is left with a depleted battery for a long period of time.

  • Turn off the device and charge with an authentic Samsung charger to prevent depletion.
  • Charge the device to approximately 50 ~ 70% for long-term storage.
  • Charge the device once every 3 ~ 6 months.
  • Store in cool, non-humid environments to preserve battery performance.
Optimize the overall usage of your phone

You can optimize your phone using the Device care feature to reduce battery consumption by closing unused apps and controlling abnormal battery usage. Follow the steps below.

Step 1. Open Settings, and then select Battery and device care.

Step 2. Tap Optimize now. Device care automatically optimizes your phone.

The quick optimization feature improves device performance through the following actions.

  • Closes apps running in the background.
  • Manages abnormal battery usage.
  • Scans for crashed apps and malware.

Using the auto optimization feature

You can set the device to perform auto optimization when your device is not in use. Tap More options > Automation > Auto optimize daily and tap the switch to activate it.

Adjust Background usage limits

The more unused apps there are running in the background, the more power your battery will use. Background usage limits can be set to reduce battery consumption. Follow the steps below.

Step 1. Open Settings, and then select Battery and device care.

Step 2. Tap Battery.

Step 3. Tap Background usage limits.

Step 4. Set the app you want to control.

You can choose from the following settings:

  • Put unused apps to sleep which will automatically put apps to sleep if they have not been used for a while.
  • Sleeping apps allows you to choose the apps that won't run in the background. You can view your current sleeping apps as well.
  • Deep sleeping apps will never run in the background and will only work when you open them.
  • Never sleeping apps allows you to choose which apps will not automatically be set to sleeping mode.
Optimize individual apps

You can optimize individual apps to use less battery. Follow the steps below.

Step 1. Open Settings, and then select Apps.

Step 2. Tap More options (the three vertical dots).

Step 3. Select Special access.

Step 4. Select Optimize battery usage.

Step 5. Select the app you want to optimize. Optimized apps use less battery.

Note: Optimized apps will use less battery, but some background functions will be restricted.

Note:

  • Actual battery lifespan varies by network environment, features and apps used, frequency of calls and messages, number of times charged, and many other factors.
  • Device screenshots and menus may vary depending on the device model and software version.
