Why digital inclusion matters and how teachers can make it happen

Not every classroom has one device per student, and that is where digital inclusion comes in. Discover how shared devices, blended learning and peer support can prepare every learner for the future of education.

When it comes to preparing students for the future, access makes all the difference. In a classroom where some students can explore coding on a tablet while others cannot, the gap quickly shows. Those without access may miss out on key activities, interactions, and skills that are becoming essential for tomorrow.

That is where digital inclusion comes in. It means making sure every learner has access to devices, digital skills, and opportunities to participate fully. And while it may sound like a big challenge, teachers across the region are proving it can start with small, practical steps.

We spoke with Ms. Dini Widianti, a Math Teacher at Salman Al Farisi Junior High School in Bandung, Indonesia, about her classroom journey. Her students moved from sharing just one Galaxy Tablet per group to now having a device for every learner. Along the way, she discovered how small changes in practice can open big opportunities for inclusion. Here’s how she made it work in her classroom:

1. Start small with shared devices

Not every school begins with one device per student, and that is okay. Ms. Dini’s class started by sharing one Galaxy Tablet among groups of three or four students.

“Even with one tablet per group, students shared ideas, recorded answers in Samsung Notes, and supported one another. It showed me that inclusion is not about how many devices you have, but how you use them to bring every student into the learning process.”

Even limited access created meaningful opportunities for teamwork, problem solving, and shared responsibility.

2. Blend analogue and digital learning

Digital inclusion does not mean replacing traditional methods overnight. It often starts with balance.

In Ms. Dini’s classroom, the tablet was first used only to record answers, while most note-taking and discussions still happened on paper. This mix kept learning familiar while gradually introducing students to digital tools.

This blended approach made the transition less overwhelming for students and gave teachers an easier way to build digital confidence step by step.

3. Encourage peer-to-peer learning

Inclusion is not just about devices. It is also about people. Group activities created space for every student to participate.

Peer tutors often guided classmates who needed help, making teamwork an essential part of the process. When confident students supported peers who were less familiar with the tablet, everyone stayed engaged. The result was a classroom where digital learning became a shared experience instead of a barrier.

Why it matters

Digital inclusion is not only about accessibility but also about preparing students for the future. The world they will step into will demand digital literacy as much as reading and writing. Every small action teachers take today, whether it is setting up group activities with shared devices, blending teaching approaches, or encouraging peer-to-peer learning, helps students build the confidence and skills to thrive in a digital-first future.

As Ms. Dini reflects:

“Now that every student has a Galaxy Tablet, lessons run more smoothly. I no longer need to carry extra tools to class, and results can be shared instantly. It saves time and keeps students engaged, which shows how much of a difference access can make.”

Her journey shows that inclusion is built one step at a time. And when every learner has the chance to take part, the impact reaches far beyond the classroom.
