My TV remote isn't working

There are a number of reasons why your remote may not be working. The most common are physical damage, battery issues, pairing issues, or issues with the infrared sensor on the remote or TV.

Replace the batteriesClick to Expand

Batteries that are depleted or incorrectly inserted are the most common reason for a remote to stop working or to work intermittently. We recommend replacing the batteries as a first step and checking that the + and - ends of the batteries correspond with the + and - battery slots in the remote.

Manually restart your remoteClick to Expand

Remove the batteries from the remote for at least twenty seconds, then press the power button on the (empty) remote. Replace the batteries and turn the TV off and on again at the switch.

Turn off your TV and unplug it from the power socket. Wait for around thirty seconds before plugging your TV back in. Try and turn your TV on again.

Pair your smart remote againClick to Expand

Pairing is the term for connecting two smart devices together. If your connection isn't working, re-pairing is a good way to try and fix the connection. This method is only applicable for Samsung smart remotes. 

 

The pairing method will differ slightly depending on which remote you are using. Generally, it will involve pressing two buttons simultaneously for three or more seconds.

 

Make sure your remote is within 12 inches of the TV, then hold the relevant buttons down for three seconds, then release. Find your remote below to see which buttons you need to use.

Your TV and TV remote communicate with each other using infrared signals. If there are any objects between the sensors on the remote and the TV, infrared signals may be blocked. On most Samsung TVs the infrared sensor is on the the lower right hand side of the screen or the lower middle. Make sure that there are no objects infront of these areas of your TV.

 

Electronic equipment can also disrupt the signal from your remote. If you have any electronics such as lights, radios or mobile devices around your TV, try moving them away.

You can check that your TV remote is producing an infrared signal using any digital camera, including the one on your smartphone. Turn on the camera and point the remote at the lens. Press the power, volume or channel buttons on your remote while looking at the phone screen. You should be able to see a light or flash coming from the remote.
