My TV remote isn't working

Tip: if the Home button isn't working, you can also access the menu by pressing GUIDE then RETURN on your remote control.

There are a number of reasons why your remote may not be working. The most common are physical damage, battery issues, pairing issues, or issues with the IR sensor on the remote or TV.

Replacement remotes can be purchased from Partmaster.

The below troubleshooting suggestions may help solve the problem. If you are still having issues after trying the below, please get in touch.

Batteries that are depleted or incorrectly inserted are the most common reason for a remote to stop working or to work intermittently. We recommend replacing the batteries as a first step, and checking that the + and - of the batteries correspond with the + and - battery slots in the remote.

Turn it off and on again.

It's the old IT cliche but it often works. Remove the batteries from the remote for at least twenty seconds, then press the power button on the (empty) remote, then replace the batteries. Switch the TV itself off and on again.

Check the infrared remote and sensor.

Firstly check that nothing is blocking the infrared sensor on the TV, then check that the IR on your remote is working. You can do this by using a digital camera (including the one on your smartphone).

Turn the camera on, then aim the remote at the lens of the camera, This should be from fairly close. Press a button on the remote, then check the image on your camera screen. You should be able to see the infrared eye light up or flash if your remote is sending a signal.

Pair your smart remote again

Pairing is the term for connecting a smart device to another smart device. If connections fail, re-pairing (or reconnecting) is a first step in trying to get the connection working again. Note that this will not be applicable to non-smart remotes.

The pairing method will differ slightly depending on which remote you are using. Generally, it will involve pressing two buttons simultaneously for three or more seconds.

Make sure your remote is within 12 inches of the TV, then hold the relevant buttons down for three seconds, then release. Check the below remotes to see which resembles yours and which buttons you need to use.

If your remote still isn't working, get in touch and we can investigate further.
