How to measure body composition, heart rate, stress, and blood oxygen on Galaxy Watch series
Your Samsung Galaxy Watch allows you to monitor key health metrics directly from your wrist, including body composition, heart rate, stress levels, and blood oxygen. Tracking this data helps you gain insights into your physical wellness and optimise your daily fitness routines. Learn how to measure each health metric accurately using the steps below.
Note:
- The application of each function may vary depending on the Galaxy Watch model.
- For more information on the function, please refer to the user guide for each model.
- Supported features may vary depending on the country or region.
You can measure body compositions such as skeletal muscle mass and body fat. Bio-electrical resistance analysis measures body composition by shedding microscopic currents in the human body and changing resistance values according to the difference between the flow of fat and muscle currents.
Note: This function is only available for health care purposes, so do not use it for medical purposes such as diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases.
How to measure body composition
Note:
- When measuring body composition, you can measure it with another finger instead of the guided finger, but the error of the result value can be increased. Please follow the instructions to measure in an accurate position.
- If the body composition is not in the correct position when measuring the body composition, the measurement may not be accurate, or the result may have errors.
Precautions for body fat measurement
- This feature is only available for health care purposes, so do not use it for medical purposes such as diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases.
- Do not measure body composition if you are using an implantable pacemaker or defibrillator, or if you have any other electronic device implanted in your body.
- A low current passes through the body during body composition measurement. This is considered harmless to the human body, but to prevent risks, do not measure your body composition during pregnancy.
- For accurate measurement, avoid the wrist bones and raise the watch toward your elbow, fitting it snugly against your wrist. Unlike professional body composition analysers, wrist-worn watches measure the upper body's body composition to estimate the overall body composition and display the results.
- In the following cases, body composition measurement results may not be accurate.
- When the upper and lower body components are severely imbalanced
- In cases of severe obesity
- When muscle mass is very high
On the Galaxy Watch, you can choose between three options: Measure continuously, Every 10 mins, or Manual only.
Setting up your heart rate measurement method
How to measure heart rate manually
Precautions for heart rate measurement
- Rest for 5 minutes before starting the measurement.
- If the measurement differs significantly from the expected value, rest and measure again 30 minutes later.
- During winter or cold weather, warm your body before measuring.
- After smoking or drinking, your heart rate may speed up and your readings may appear different from usual.
- Speaking, yawning, or taking deep breaths during measurement may cause the measurement to be inaccurate.
- Depending on my movements, physiological condition, measurement environment, and conditions, the measured heart rate values may not be accurate.
- If heart rate measurement is not working well, check the position of the watch on your wrist and make sure there are no obstacles blocking the sensor.
Measuring stress
Note:
- If the measurement menu does not appear when selecting the stress function in the Health app, the stress measurement method setting may be set to 'Measure continuously'. Please change it to 'Manual Only' before use.
- When measurement is set to ‘Measure continuously’, stress is measured once per second when heart rate is normal and there is no movement.
Measuring stress manually
Stress measurement precautions
- The more frequent stress measurements are, the more accurate stress measurement results can be obtained by the accumulation of data.
- Stress measurement results may differ from an individual’s emotional state.
- Stress may not be measured during sleep, during exercise, immediately after exercise, or when movement is high.
Measure oxygen in your blood to see if your blood is carrying oxygen well in each part of your body.
How to measure blood oxygen
Precautions for blood oxygen measurement
- Rest for 5 minutes before starting the measurement.
- During winter or cold weather, warm your body before measuring.
- Depending on your movements, physiological status, measurement environment, and conditions, the measured blood oxygen results may not be accurate.
