Why is my Samsung Galaxy device showing a blank or black screen?

Learn how to troubleshoot a Samsung Galaxy device with a blank or black display caused by battery issues, charging problems, physical damage, or software glitches.

If your Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet shows a blank or black screen, it could be due to a dead battery, charging issues, physical damage, or a software malfunction. Follow these steps to identify and resolve the problem quickly.

1. Check for Physical or Liquid Damage

Inspect your device, charger, and USB cable for any visible signs of damage. Look for bent pins, corrosion, or liquid damage on the USB connection. The Liquid Damage Indicator (LDI) should be all white or white with pink or purple Xs. If the USB connection feels loose or moves excessively, it may need repair.

- Remove any cases or accessories that might block the charging port or buttons.

2. Force Restart Your Device

A forced restart can resolve temporary software glitches causing the blank screen. Here's how to do it:

  1. Press and hold the Power key (or Side key) and Volume down key for more than 7 seconds until the device restarts.
  2. If your device has a removable battery, take it out for 60 seconds, then reinsert it.

Note: If you use biometric security, you'll need your backup password to unlock the device after a reboot.

3. Charge Your Device Properly

Connect your phone or tablet to the correct charger and let it charge for several hours, depending on the charger's wattage. If the battery was completely drained, it may take longer to show signs of life.

- To turn off your device normally, press and hold the Side button and Volume Down button simultaneously, or open the notification panel and tap Restart.

4. Additional Things to Check

Software update issues, interrupted downloads, or unstable network connections can sometimes cause display problems. Ensure your device is running the latest software version.

Supported Samsung Galaxy devices include Galaxy S24, Galaxy S25, Galaxy S26, Galaxy Z Fold, Galaxy Z Flip, and Galaxy A series.

Why the Issue Happens

A blank or black screen on your Samsung Galaxy device can result from various factors, such as:

- Dead or critically low battery.

- Charging port or cable damage.

- Software glitches or corrupted system files.

- Physical or liquid damage to the display or internal components.

When Updates May Not Appear

Software updates might not appear if your device has insufficient storage, unstable internet connectivity, or outdated software. Regularly check for updates in Settings > Software Update.
