Audio stops playing on Galaxy mobile devices or accessories

If music apps on your Samsung Galaxy phone or tablet are not allowed to run in the background, your audio may stop if the phone or app goes to sleep. Whether you're streaming music from third-party apps like Spotify, using Samsung earbuds, or listening directly to audio files on your phone, you'll need to update your sleeping apps settings to prevent this from happening.

Note
Available menu options and settings may vary by the phone or tablet, and software version.
1

Close background apps and free up memory.

Apps running in the background may affect device performance and cause slowdowns. Close all recently used apps and free up memory by closing unused apps running in the background, then check whether device performance improves.

First, tap the Recent button (three vertical lines), and then tap Close all.

Next, open Settings, and then tap Device care > Memory > Clean now.

2

Restart your Galaxy device.

A temporary system error may cause the display to stop responding normally. Restart your device and check again.

  • Press and hold the side key and volume down key at the same time for more than 2 seconds until the Power off menu appears, and then tap Restart.

  • If the Restart menu does not appear, press and hold the side key and volume down key at the same time for more than 7 seconds until the device restarts automatically.
3

Check for software and app updates on your Galaxy device.

Outdated software or apps may cause compatibility issues or abnormal display behavior. Make sure your device software and apps are up to date, then test your device.

Open Settings, then tap Software Update > Check for updates. Follow the on-screen instructions. A confirmation will appear once the software is up to date.

Next, open the Google Play Store app, then select your Google account. Tap Manage apps & device > Update all to check for available updates.

4

Adjust the Battery settings on your Galaxy device.

Adjusting these settings can help optimize power usage and restore audio functionality. Change the battery settings, and then check if the issue persists.

To do so, open Settings, and then tap Apps. Select the app you want to prevent from sleeping, and then tap Battery. Choose from one of the available options:

  • Unrestricted: The app will be permitted to run in the background without any restrictions. This may increase battery usage, but the app will continue running and playing sound until you stop it.

  • Optimized: The phone will learn how you use the app, and will put the app to sleep based on your usage patterns. It may still occasionally stop the app until the phone learns how you use it.

You'll also see Restricted, but this option will not allow the app to play music in the background.

5

Remove any apps you're having trouble with from Sleeping apps.

If audio stops playing on your Galaxy mobile device or accessory, it may be caused by apps in the Sleeping apps list. Removing problematic apps from this list can help restore audio functionality. Check and adjust the Sleeping apps settings to resolve the issue.

Navigate to and open Settings, then search for and select Sleeping apps. Tap Sleeping apps again and check the list for the app(s) you're experiencing issues with.

If it doesn't appear in this list, tap Back, then tap Deep sleeping apps, and then look for the app there. Touch and hold the app in the list, and then tap Remove to delete it from your Sleeping apps list.

For more information about Sleeping apps, please see our Sleeping apps guide.

6

Turn off Power saving mode.

Power Saving mode might be restricting functionality, causing apps to close in the background depending on the selected Power mode. Disabling this mode can help restore audio operation.

Open Settings, then tap Battery, and then turn off Power saving by tapping its switch.

7

Adjust the Data saver settings.

Data Saver mode on your Galaxy mobile device might impact app behavior, potentially causing audio playback issues. You can select specific apps to continue running even when Data Saver is active.

  • Navigate to Settings, and then search for and select Special access. Tap Apps that can always use data, and then tap the switch next to the music app you want to keep running.

If you have a data limit set, you will need to adjust the limit for the music app.

  • Navigate to Settings, then tap Apps, and then tap the app you want to keep running. Tap Mobile data, and then tap the switch next to Allow data usage while Data saver is on.

8

Adjust playback options on your Galaxy device.

If the issue remains, you can:

  • Check the music app's playback options in the app's Settings menu.

  • Contact the app's developer for more information.
