Use Smart Switch to Transfer Content with Your PC or Mac

Use Smart Switch on your PC or Mac

With Samsung Smart Switch, you can use your PC or Mac to easily to transfer contacts, photos, messages, and more from your old phone to your new Galaxy phone. But first, you'll need to download Samsung Smart Switch on your computer and phone. Keep reading to see if your computer is compatible and to learn how to transfer all your data.

Requirements for PC and Mac

Before you get started, follow these steps on your computer:

  • Make sure your PC or Mac has the necessary system requirements.

  • Make sure the data you want to transfer is supported. Learn more about transferable content.

  • Turn off or temporarily disable your firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware, anti-malware, and other security tools on your PC or Mac. These can block Smart Switch from accessing and transferring information to your new phone.

Create a Backup

After installing Smart Switch, you'll need to back up the content from your old phone and save it on your PC or Mac. Here's how:

Connect your phone to your computer using a USB cable, and then touch ALLOW on your phone. Next, navigate to and open Smart Switch on your computer and then select Backup. Your computer will automatically start backing up your phone's data. The backup may take several minutes. When it's done, a screen will appear, informing you it's complete. Select OK.

Note: You may need to unlock the connected phone, and then select USB file transfer to transfer files via USB.

Create a Backup Using Smart Switch on PC or Mac

Default Save Location

When you back up your old phone's content on a PC or Mac, the files are automatically stored in a default location (unless you've chosen a different location). Below are the default locations, so you'll know where everything is stored.
 

Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista

C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Samsung\Smart Switch PC


Windows 10

C:\Users\[username]\Documents\Samsung\SmartSwitch
 

Mac OS X 

/Users/[username]/Documents/Samsung/SmartSwitch/backup

Note: To quickly access the AppData folder, select Start. In the search bar, type appdata and press the Enter key.

Transfer Content

If you can't wait to get all your music or photos, follow the steps below to transfer the backup files on your computer onto your new phone.

Open Smart Switch on your computer. When prompted, connect your new phone to the computer using the USB cable. Once it's connected, the Smart Switch screen will appear.

On your computer, select Restore and, if desired, select Select your backup data to choose what specific data will be restored. When you're ready, select Restore now. A screen will appear informing you that the restoration is complete. Select OK.

Note: You may need to allow permissions on your phone to complete the backup.

Restore Content from Your PC or Mac with Smart Switch

Sync Microsoft Outlook

Here's another way to get content from your computer onto a new phone - you can synchronize data on your phone with your Outlook account.

On your computer, select Outlook Sync on the Smart Switch screen. If desired, select Sync Preferences for Outlook to choose specific content to sync from your Outlook account. When you're ready, select Sync Now. When syncing is complete, select Confirm.

Note: You need an Outlook account and Outlook data on your phone for this method to work.
