Set up and connect the ADT Water Leak Detector

Use the ADT Water Leak Detector with SmartThings

Nearly every homeowner is at risk of facing a water leak from pipes and plumbing. Even just a little bit of water can wreak havoc on your home. Fortunately, you can catch leaks before they can cause serious damage when you use the ADT Water Leak Detector. It will send alerts right to the SmartThings app on your phone if it detects a leak.

Before you get started

The ADT Water Leak Sensor is meant to protect your family and your home, so you need to be sure you are setting it up properly. Keep these things in mind before you set it up:

  • Make sure that your ADT Security Hub is disarmed before connecting a new device.

  • Only set up one new device at a time so it can pair properly.

  • Do not remove the tab until you are ready to set up the Water Leak Detector.

  • Make sure you are within 15 feet of your ADT Security Hub during the detector's setup.

Connect the Water Leak Detector

Don't you hate going on vacation, only to come back to a flood in your home? That won't happen with the ADT Water Leak Detector because you'll know the moment a leak starts.

On your phone, navigate to and open the SmartThings app. Then, tap Menu, and navigate to the Location where the ADT hub is saved. Tap Add (the plus sign), and then tap Add device. Under Brands, tap ADT, and then tap ADT security devices.

Select ADT Water Leak Detector from the list of devices, and then follow the on-screen instructions to finish connecting the sensor to SmartThings. When it's connected, place it where a leak is likely to happen, such as in the basement.

Tips for placement

Place the ADT Water Leak Detector in areas of your home that are at risk of a water leak, such as bathrooms, basement, clogged drains, or old pipes. Make sure to place the ADT Water Leak Detector so that:

  • If a pool of water forms below the detector, moisture will touch all the metal contacts at the bottom of the detector to trigger an alert.

  • If water drips from above the detector, water will touch both metal contacts at the top of the detector to trigger an alert.
