Difference Between HMD Odyssey and Gear VR

Ready to immerse yourself into virtual reality but not sure which virtual reality headset is the best for you? Let us help you make that choice.

Required Equipment

HMD Odyssey

To start your VR experience, you'll need a Windows PC that meets all system requirements. Windows Mixed Reality, Windows Mixed Reality Ultra, and Steam VR require different specifications, so make sure you have the right PC.

Note: Notebook Odyssey is recommended, but you can run a PC check on your Windows PC to make sure your PC meets the specifications.

Gear VR with Controller

To delve into the world of virtual reality with the Gear VR with Controller, all you need is a compatible Samsung smartphone. Simply insert the phone in the headset and you'll be able to enjoy endless entertainment.

Note: Gear VR with Controller Galaxy Note8 Edition  is compatible with the Note8 and all earlier phones going back to the Galaxy S6 and up. Gear VR with Controller is not compatible with the Note8, but is still compatible back to Galaxy S6.

Different Experience

We're sure you'll have a blast in both virtual worlds, but there are differences between the Gear VR with Controller and HMD Odyssey.

Being powered by a powerful PC, HMD Odyssey offers better visuals and immersive experience. Also, it allows you to look and move around, as every bit of your movement in the real world translates to the virtual world, while Gear VR only allows you to look around in full 360 degrees.

However, Gear VR  with over 1000+ content, can be carried around almost anywhere, and has an affordable cost, especially when you already own a compatible Samsung phone.

Now, the decision is all yours to make. Good luck!
