Set Up Galaxy S9 and S9+ to use Iris Security

Did you ever think you'd see the day where you could use your eyes to unlock your phone? S9 and S9+ provides iris recognition as a quick, easy, and super secure way to verify your identity. That's right! Your phone will know it's you, just from that special sparkle in your eye.

The available screens and settings may vary by wireless service provider and software version.

Set Up Iris Security

First things first, let's register your iris. Open Settings, and then search for and select Iris Scanner. Follow the on-screen prompts to set up iris security. If you haven't set up a Pattern, PIN, or Password yet, you'll be required to. Make sure you remember it as you'll need to unlock your phone after it restarts or when it hasn't been used for more than 24 hours. Learn more about Setting Up Iris Security.

Tips for Using the Iris Scanner

Follow these tips and you'll be unlocking your phone James Bond-style in no time:

  • Hold your phone at eye level, about 10 to 14 inches from your face.

  • If you are wearing glasses or contacts, it's harder for the iris scanner to identify you. You can try taking them off for better results.

  • Keep your eyes open and look at the top of the screen.

  • Iris recognition works best indoors. It might not work in direct sunlight.

  • Iris recognition works best when there's no dirt or smudges on the iris camera, LED sensor, or proximity sensor above your screen.

Iris Verification

You can use iris recognition to verify your identity on supported apps and make payments quickly and securely with Samsung Pay just by using your eyes. To see these options, open Settings, and then search for and select Iris Scanner. Enter your credentials, and then look under IRIS VERIFICATION for the following options:

  • Samsung Pass: Use your eyes to verify your identity with Internet and other supported apps.

  • Samsung Pay: Use your eyes to make payments quickly and securely.

Preview Screen Mask

Just for giggles, add a fun screen mask like doughnuts or cartoon animal eyes to spice things up a little. To add a screen mask, open Settings, and then search for and select Iris Scanner. Enter your credentials, and then touch Preview screen mask. Select the mask you want to use, and just like that, it's saved automatically. Go on, try it out!
