Windows 10 S mode FAQs for Samsung PCs

Just like Safe Mode on a phone, Windows 10 has S mode. It provides security and performance while also giving you a productive, though toned down, Windows experience. This mode only allows apps from the Microsoft Store to run and requires Microsoft Edge for safe browsing.

How do I switch out of S mode?

  • When you switch out of S mode, you'll go back to using the standard version of Windows 10.

    To switch from S mode, open Settings, click Update & Security, and then click Activation. Under Switch to Windows 10 section, click Go to the Store, and then click Get.

    Note: Don't click Upgrade your edition of Windows.

  • What apps can I use in Windows 10 S mode?

  • For security reasons, only apps from the Microsoft Store can run in S mode. Launch the Microsoft Store and browse through it to see all of the the available apps.

  • Can I set Google Chrome, Firefox, or anoher browser as my default browser in Windows 10 S mode?

  • No. When you are using the Windows 10 S mode, Microsoft Edge is always the default browser, and Bing is the default search engine. But you can access other browsers and search engines while in S mode. You can download any available browser from the Microsoft Store.

  • Do I need antivirus software while in S mode?

  • It is always recommended that all Windows devices use antivirus software. Currently, the only antivirus software compatible with Windows 10 S mode is Windows Defender Security Center, which comes with it.

  • Will my printer work while in Windows 10 S mode?

  • Many hardware accessories and peripherals (such as printers) that work with Windows 10 Home and Pro also work with Windows 10 in S mode, though sometimes they only offer limited functionality.
