Smart options for controlling your Samsung TV or projector

Samsung TV with Voice Assistant screen open

Tired of using a physical remote that you constantly misplace or get mixed up with your other remotes? We’re here to tell you that you can say goodbye to traditional remotes and instead use SmartThings or voice assistants to control your TV or projector! Whether you prefer an app on your phone or using your voice to give commands, you won’t have to worry about your old remote anymore. However, if you need to replace your remote, we can help with that too.

Use SmartThings to control your device

If you add your Samsung TV or projector to the mobile SmartThings app, you’ll be able to control it from your phone! Once it has been registered in the app, tap the Devices tab, and then navigate to and select your model. An on-screen remote will appear in the app. Use this remote to control the TV or projector the way you normally would! You can change the channel, adjust the volume level, and so on.

Devices tab selected in the SmartThings app

On the contrary, you can use your TV or projector to control your other SmartThings devices! That’s right, Samsung TVs and projectors come with their own SmartThings app. Simply navigate to the app on your screen; any smart devices registered to your SmartThings account will appear. Use your remote to select the different devices and control them, such as turning them on and off.

Note: Smart device control and functionality may be limited on the TV version of the SmartThings app.

Use Bixby to control your TV or projector

You can speak to and give commands to Bixby when using your Samsung TV or projector. If you need to open an app, increase the volume, or start playing some music just ask Bixby. It's like having your very own personal assistant right on your TV. To use Bixby, you will need to sign into your Samsung account.

Use Amazon Alexa to control your TV or projector

Just like with Bixby, Amazon Alexa is available on select 2020 through 2023 TVs! Once Alexa has been set up, you can control your device’s basic functions, like the volume level or channel, with voice commands. You can even ask Alexa to find certain movies or search for songs via Amazon Music.

If you’re using an Amazon Fire Stick, Alexa is also available for that service! The assistant can help you find certain content to watch when you’re having trouble deciding what to pick.

Unfortunately, you cannot control smart devices through Alexa on your TV or projector. However, if you have an Alexa device such as an Echo Dot, you can connect it with SmartThings! In other words, Alexa will be able to control your TV and any other devices that are registered to your account. Just give a few voice commands and Alexa will take care of everything.
