Set up and use Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa with SmartThings

While you can always control your SmartThings devices from the SmartThings app on your phone, and some from your Galaxy watch, there's an even easier way. Connect them to your Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa, and control them with your voice! You'll be able to control SmartThings devices such as the Smart Plug around your smart home just by speaking a command to your preferred assistant.

Set up your Google Assistant

Connect and use Google Assistant with SmartThings

Google Assistant will only be able to control the devices that are registered to the SmartThings location you choose.

To begin your Google smart home journey, you'll need to link the SmartThings app and Google Assistant together. Once linked, Google Assistant will be able to control any permitted SmartThings devices.

  1. On your phone, open the Google Home app. If you haven't installed it, you can do so from the Play Store.
  2. Tap Settings in the bottom right corner.
  3. Tap Works with Google
  4. In the top row, tap the Search icon that looks like a magnifying glass.
  5. Type SmartThings and then tap SmartThings in the list of results.
  6. Tap Continue to link your accounts
  7. In the SmartThings pop up, tap Authorize.
  8. Next, you'll see a list of your existing, compatible devices. Tap each one that you want to add, and then tap Add to a room.
  9. Select the room(s), and then tap Next. 
  10. Once you're done assigning your devices to their corresponding rooms, tap Done.
  11. Now, to command your devices, you can open your Google Assistant on your phone and speak your command, or say "Hey Google," and then state your command.

Disconnect Google Assistant from SmartThings

You can remove Google from SmartThings at any time if you're no longer using it.

  1. Open the SmartThings app, and tap the Menu tab (the three horizontal lines).
  2. Then, tap the Settings icon in the top right, and tap Linked services.
  3. Next, tap Google, and then tap Unlink
  4. Tap Unlink again to confirm.

Set up Amazon Alexa with SmartThings

The SmartThings app works with Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, and Amazon Tap smart speakers. Alexa can be used to control light bulbs, on/off switches, dimmer switches, thermostats, locks, and Routines configured with SmartThings. Alexa can also check the status of motion and contact sensors.

But first, you'll need to connect the Alexa app to SmartThings.

  1. To begin, download the Amazon Alexa app, and then set up your Amazon Alexa device.
  2. Open the Alexa app; if needed, verify your account and allow the different permissions.
  3. Tap the Message Alexa field at the bottom.
  4. Type in Smart Home, and then when you see the bubble for Smart Home Skills appear, tap it.
  5. Tap the Search Alexa Skills bar, and enter SmartThings.
  6. Tap SmartThings from the list.
  7. Tap Enable, and then follow the on-screen instructions to link your SmartThings account to your Alexa account.
  8. When complete, you'll be able to say commands like, "Alexa, turn on the living room lights."

Discover devices and use them with Amazon Alexa

The Alexa app will automatically discover devices that are set up in your home or office.

  1. Tap Discover devices after authorizing your Location, and then wait for the device discovery process to be complete. This can take up to 45 seconds. Discover Devices will also discover your scenes and routines.
  2. When the discovery process is finished, tap Next. Select your desired device from the list, tap Set up device, and then tap Continue. Repeat these steps to add other discovered devices. Once you've added the available devices, they'll appear under the Device tab in the Alexa app.
  3. If the Alexa app does not start discovering devices, you will need to manually add the devices. In the Devices tab, tap Add (the plus sign) in the top right, and then tap Add Device.
  4. Search for or select the device you want to add, and then tap SmartThings.
  5. Finally, tap Discover devices and wait for the device discovery process to complete.
  6. Once everything is registered, you can use the Alexa app to automate devices, scenes, and routines by tapping the name or icon of your desired option.

To disconnect from SmartThings

  1. Open the SmartThings app, and then tap the Menu tab (the three horizontal lines).
  2. Then, tap the Settings icon in the top right, and tap Linked services.

  4. Tap Unlink again to confirm.

To disconnect rom Amazon Alexa

  1. Open the Alexa app, and then tap the Message Alexa field at the bottom. 
  2. Type Smart Home, and then tap the Smart Home Skills bubble when you see it appear. 
  3. From the list, locate and tap on SmartThings.
  4. Tap Disable skill. 
  5. Tap Disable to confirm.
